Before you start be aware that after reinstalling windows you will need to install various drivers and possibly service packs 1 & 2 depending on your XP disk.
If you do not have a driver disk as well as the XP CD (drivers will not all be on there) copy the C:\ drivers folder to cd if you can.
    If not go to

    Partition resizer
Shrink the windows partition make enough room for a new drivers partition.
Create and format a new partition and copy your drivers over. If you are very lucky when you installed sp1/2 you will have kept the install files and you can copy these too.

    You can also use
    Swiss Knife

When you insert the XP CD to re-install just format the existing windows partion do not create a new one or setup will grab the whole disk again.
You may also need to set your in bios to boot from CD before hard drive.
When you insert the cd watch and catch the instruction to press any key to boot from cd or it will go back to the hard drive.
If you need more help with any of this post a further query.
