wire less protection

I have put some recommended programs onto my pc, avast,boclean,threatfire,commodo firewall and spyware blaster, all seem to cover what mcafee did, except protecting my wireless network. what would be recommended here? as it is only covered by a preshare key and encryption. is that enough?

 

My recommendation would be the use of WPA2 (if your router supports it) with a long passphrase; however, I'm of the opinion that wireless encryption is like the locks on your doors -- they only keep the honest people out. For true wireless protection, the use of an IPsec VPN between computers on the wireless network is probably the best way to go. That would be a layered security approach, on top of the WPA2. Unfortunately, a VPN is probably not an option using an ordinary home wireless router as your internet gateway and VPNs aren't particularly easy to setup. For a home environment, WPA2 is probably strong enough. I do MAC filtering as well, although even that is not bullet proof.

 

Methinks that WPA2 mixed with MAC Filtering is the best choice for home network. By the way, no one should be able to catch the signal behind walls, because home routers have small signal strenght. Powerful hackers are searching much bigger targets than home network

 

well, it is covered with wpa2 and a long string, so as long as thats seen as ok i'll sit with it,i'll read up on mac filtering, but i follow the same thinking as pebkak, use a bigger lock and someone builds a better bolt cutter!

 

yep unfortunatly security is always breachable, you just have to make it as difficult as possible for em

if you can use a feature use it, although its unlikely you never know, if your neighbours are leaching your connection and if they do something illegal guess where the big binary finger is pointing... :-D
