Wireless adapter has started to freeze up pc

I have recently moved into a new flat so i had to leave my old wireless router at my mum and dads as they really wouldn't know how to go about setting up a new one.

The router i'm using now is a Belkin Wireless G and i'm using a Belkin Wireless G adapter which i had previously used with my other router.

I had the whole set up working, up until i tried to increase the security on my router, basically to stop people tapping into my router.

I had a standard 5 character password and Network ID set up- however, as many people may know (as i'm sure alot of routers, if not most do) uses an IP address thing to adjust all router settings i.e. 192.168.0.1.

I'm not exactly sure what settings i altered (i think i tried to change WEP to WPA and it didn't work- so i tried to change it back.

But now i have changed everything back (to the best of my knowledge), every time i plug my Wireless adapter to try and connect to the secure network again, it simple freezes up my pc (i can move my mouse, but it doesnt move properly, it takes about 30 seconds then it jumps). If i take the adapter out while it is still trying to authenticate, windows (xp) simply crashes and i have to restart.

The only way i can get wireless access to work smoothly is if i take the network password off altogether and disable WEP - although I'm not happy with doing that. Wired ethernet connection works fine.

Apart from that, my pc is healthy as far as i know. Its not particularly old. Running XP with all the latest updates etc.

Could anyone advise me on resolving this problem i.e. getting the wireless back up and running on a secure network.
