    Hello Everyone,

Hope you had a good weekend,

A friend of mine had a laptop given to him today as he could not afford a new one! the one he got is quite old! Its a Toshiba Satellite Pro AG60EN and it has no wireless card in it and dongle use in this area is just out of the question as we cant pick up a signal.

Can any one recommend a good but cheap wireless card (if that's what it's called) please, also its running XP professional, would it be OK to upgrade it to Vista basic?

Also, if any mod or admin could change my username to Nottingham89 it would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Ross

    Thanks for the reply,

I did not explain well enough what the problem is.

We can't use mobile broadband where we live because we cant get no signal, just like a mobile phone, no signal no connection.

For example, I can connect direct to the internet because I have a router and a built wireless card/receiver etc.

On his laptop there isn't one, but there is a slot in the side to attach one so he can pick up my wireless internet?

Do you get what I mean?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

From what I understand, there are three ways you can connect (if there's no onboard ethernet): a PCMCIA Wireless Adapter, a PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter, or a USB dongle.
As far as recommendations, I'd suggest you research items such as these to find which best suits your needs, and browse any reviews you can find - consumer reviews are often the best indicators of a product's worth.

    1. XP is a better working OS than Vista so I'd stick with the OS that is installed.
    2. Finding a PCMCIA wireless card will be a challenge because laptops no longer have card slots. Hence, cards are no longer being manufactured. You might be able to pick up a used one. Be aware that there are different size PCMCIA slots. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/PCMCIA.html
You'd be better off searching for a wireless dongle. Easier to find and new is probably better than used at working out of the box and including any necessary drivers.
