I have a laptop that I have accessed wireless connections before. I recently signed up for highspeed over the phone line. I had trouble and can only access using the ethernet cable. Now my PC will not even recognize if there is a wireless connection available. How do I fix this?

aLLiKZar It's not too late to back out!

Do you have a wireless access point in your place?

I had a friend bring their laptop over and their laptop detected there was a wireless connection available. I also went to a coffee shop where I know there is one available that I have accessed before and the computer detected nothing. The wireless connection in the connections box is enabled.

yes, but do you have a wireless router in your house. If you do not, then you are probably picking up a signal from a neighbor. Wireless networking (as it stands now) is't like your wireless cell phone. you can't just boot up and expect a wireless signal with out having a wireless access point in your house. The signals only go several hundred feet. Liken it to your cordless phone. You have a base and the handset. Same principle.

if your laptop isn't seeing the router, then try resetting the router. If it works then, perhaps you should check for any firmware updates for the router. Make sure the SSID is broadcast at first so you can test it, afterwhich when you are satisfied with the connection, disable SSID for better security.

did you check for firmware updates for your router? did you try changing the channel in your router and making sure the channel that your card is set to is the same?

How do I check my built in wireless card what channel it is set to or if it is set to receive anything at all?

it's all in the wireless configuration. Check the network settings for that connection in "My Network Places"

I can access web through my 2wire router using a usb cord. Dont know if I should try and reformat tat to se ethernet or not. Afraid to because had trouble setting up in first place. Also if I try to reinstall afraid I will be locked out of web altogether.

sounds like like it could also be drivers for your wireless card. Did you try updating them?
also, are you using WinXP you should be on SP2. The wireless z-config is much better.
