in my neighborhood we can pick up several wireless networks.
Will that interfere with me setting up a home wireless network?

Not really.....just make sure you secure your WLAN with a WEP/WPA encryption key so the others cant access it! (they may be able to grab your data packets from mid air, but they wont be able to read them)

If you can see them, they can see you, unless you disable your SSID broadcasting (which i would recommend you do)

No, although you need to worry about security. Things like WEP (wired equivalent protection), which is another way of saying passwords. Reason is you already know there are people who can use your network if it is unprotected.

The reason all those networks can share the ether is simple, they transmit data in short bursts. It is possible to interfer is one packet of data, but they are designed to be a little random, so the odds for a second collision is small, and things move so fast that you'd never notice the first one.

In my home I use both wired and wireless. Wired is always more secure, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying both.

if you do have some collisions going on, change the wireless channle. you can do that in the advanced wireless settings on your router
