Hey Guys, I'm going to need some help on this one. I'm helping my sister solve her network issues but I'm not all that familiar with how they work. She just bought a notebook and she had the guys at the geek-squad come out and set her up. All was working okay until a month or so, when all of a sudden her computer couldn't communicate with her router. Since then she's had to manually connect to her modem but she'd like to take advantage of her wireless capabilities.

For some reason she had her system restore off so we can't roll her system back to solve this.

In talking to the people at lynksys, everything seems to be working okay as far as their equipment. They say there is a conflict with another network adapter or something like that.

So they had me go to START, RUN, SERVICES.MSC from there I click on WIRELESS ZERO CONFIGURATION and click START. Then I click the network logo on the bottom right and open it. In there I click on CHANGE ADVANCED SETTING. Then click the WIRELESS NETWORKS tab and check the USE WINDOWS TO CONFIGURE....

It's at that point that I am able to get online.....BUT....once I reboot, I have to go back in an redo all those steps because for some reason they don't stick.

Any help would be more than appreciated. The dumb shits at gateway want her to reformat but I seem to think there are less drastic measures to fix this.

    Hey steve,
From what you're telling me, it seems like there is a conflict between net conf. software. Can you check to see if you have Linksys or any othere manufacturer's wireless configuration utility installed on your sis's laptop? If you do, uninstall it. Afterwards, go to WLAN properties by going to "Control Panel - network connections" and right click on the WLAN icon (which should be enabled). In the properties, make sure you check "connect automatically".
    Good luck.

This is another good link that helped me as my Wi-Fi would frequently connect then disconnect, article is old and most of issues have been resolved with microsoft updates etc,

but there could be something of use, seems that the Wireless Zero Configuration Utility can cause a lot of issues/conflicts!

How do I check to see if there is any Linksys or other manufacturers wireless configuration utility installed?

In Network Connections I have 3 double computer icons:

    one says:
    "wireless network connection 2"
    not connected
    broadcom 802.11 network adapter

    second says:
    "local area connection
    network cale unplugged
    marvel yukon...

    third:
    "1394 connection 2"
    connected
    1394 net adapter

what is the 1394 net adapter and do i need the broadcom?

    To give you simple answer:
first ("wireless network connection 2") is the actual wireless connection using your wireless adapter (broadcom 802.11 network adapter). - I guess you weren't connected at the time...
Second ("local area connection"), is your "hardwired" network connection using your NIC (marvel yukon...). - Which you do not have conneted with wire. Most PC's use this connection when not using wireless.
Third (1394), this is kinda hard to explain... so I'll make it simple. In your case, don't worry about it.
To find out if you have any other Wireless network configuration software, you could go into control panel - add/remove programs and try to see if there are anything like "Broadcom network configure" or, on your lower right corner of desktop, see if any wireless configuration menu is open other than Microsoft's.
