    Hi

I have an old computer that hasn't been used for about 6 months due to the power supply failing. I've finally got round to replacing it today and all is well apart from not being able to connect to my router through wireless.

I checked in device manager and there is no wireless adapter listed there. I think it has onboard WLAN as there is no wireless PCI card installed. I'm unaware of where the wireless component is located inside the machine so I cannot check all wires etc.

In the Recover partition (D:) there is Drivers>W-LAN>Ralink RT73 series with these files inside:
    -netr73.cat
    -netr73.inf
    -netr73.sys
All the other driver folders have setup.exe apart from this one.

Any idea what's going on? I know I could connect through wireless 6 months ago before the power supply was replaced. Is there something simple like a power connector I've missing?

    Cheers for any help guys!

Thanks for the suggestion, hasn't worked though. I didn't think it'd be a driver issue as the device isn't showing up in device manager at all.

I've attached it as a file because it's too long to post here really.

    Hi,
I have looked at the report and found the page for your systems drivers here...

    http://www.msi.com/product/mb/P4M890M-L-IL.html#/?div=Driver&os=Vista 32

i would download these drivers and save them to disc for future reference. I do not see a driver listed for an on board wireless card, and cannot see any listed in the report, is there an aerial on the back of your tower can you tell me if it is on the I/O plate or on an expansion slot ......

If it is in the expansion slot please (make sure you isolate the power by removing the kettle plug and pressing the start button for at least 30 sec's) remove it and tell me what it has written on it, i would clean the gold contacts with an eraser or alcohol wipe and replace it into its slot pressing gently but firmly into place, restart your machine and see if it will recognise the wireless card.

There is definitely no wireless expansion card or antenna. I was beginning to wonder whether I've dreamt up it having wireless so I've Googled the model (Medion MT8 MT459) but all the results are German.

    http://cgi.ebay.de/ALDI-Medion-MED-MT-459-Intel-Core-2-Duo-2x-2-13GHz-PC-/120710526695

On this ebay link the specs are pretty much in English and states it has onboard LAN and WLAN. So I've really got no idea what's going on.

Thanks for all your help though, I really appreciate it!

    Hey roundheadpolice,

The log entry for the motherboard is

    MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-7318 (Socket 775)

A google search came up with this.

    http://www.vanderkaap.org/hardware.html

scroll to the very bottom as it references the wireless capability there.

The serial number is the mac address for the wireless.

I took the mac address and searched at this site.

    http://hwaddress.com/

    The results came back with

    Company Arcadyan Technology Corporation
    Prefix 00:1A:2A
    Address space 00:1A:2A:00:00:00 - 00:1A:2A:FF:FF:FF
Address 4F., No. 9 , Park Avenue II,
    Science-based Industrial Park,
    Hsinchu 300
    Taiwan, Republic Of China

The final search (using Arcadyan Technology Corporation) produced this download for the wireless drivers.

There's one caveat though, The drivers support up to XP only. Since you are running Vista, Im not sure how the wireless functioned before the power supply swap.

Did you upgrade from XP to Vista at one point?

If it is a driver issue then that driver techsent has supplied is compatible with Vista.....
I found out this also..... If you have the device driver cd that came with the machine...

Install the "Multimedia panel" and "Launch Manager"-drivers from the device driver cd which came with the laptop. (Launch Manager is the most important as that's what activates the wireless-switch).
Un-block your wireless with your newly-aquired kill/revive wireless switch. It should light up and give of some sound if it works. Once activated it is advised that it is not switched of again.
It is advised to check in the Bios also to make sure that the card is enabled.

None of those worked unfortunately :(

The application disk I have is for XP, and thinking back I think that's because the original machine had XP on and broke so Medion replaced it with the mentioned model with Vista on without sending any support disks.

With the suggestions not working I opened the case and looked for the wireless card. I've linked to 2 pics I've taken showing the card and where it's plugged into.

It's plugged into a front panel card (don't know the technical name) using the red plug.

There is a jumper circled on the picture and with the computer on, and the case open, I moved the jumper across and the wireless was working. When I restarted however, it was not detected again. With the computer still on I changed the jumper settings again and it worked. But again after a reboot it stopped working.

    I'm completely confused now!

Ok so when you throw the jumper the card works, I am starting to think that this is more of a power issue or it is not been properly recognised in the bios.
You have already replaced the power supply can you tell me the reason for this?? are all of the connections seated tightly. I am thinking that maybe you should create a new thread in the hardware forum and include a link to this thread. Whilst you had the machine open did you notice any writing that would indicate as to what type of card is installed, also can the card be easly removed and replaced, if so remove it and start your system then shut down and replace the card, Bios may recognise it properly. Do you have any software installed at all for that card, if so delve in and search around as there may just need a setting changing.

The reason I changed the power supply was because the other one wasn't funtioning at all.

I was hoping there would be a quick and easy fix really, but I've got exams coming up (MTA and MCITP) so I'm not sure how much time I'll have now. I'll have a go at removing the card and replacing it again though and see what happens. If no luck then I'll come back to it at a later point and in the mean time buy an ethernet cable for a temporary measure.

    Thanks for the help though!
