right, i've been struck with the dreaded wml.exe malware/adbot (whatever it is)

    grr..

i've got no idea where it is, or how to get rid of it
it'll randomly minimize windows on me for no reason, pop up with some installation program for 'deleting it', and a red and white window saying that i've got it, as well as an annoying yellow "!" icon on my taskbar, which either directs me to a website that tells me to buy something to fix it, or to My Documents folder. :banghead

i've tried such programs as Windows Defender and SpyBot - Search and Destroy, without much luck.

i've noticed that a few people have had the same problems as I have, and I'm sure there's enough expertise here to assist me.

any help here would be MUCH appreciated.

    Hi gooney47,
    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please go to Removing Zlob aka SmitFraud, SpySheriff, Infections and follow the instructions. This will create two logs both called rapport.txt. Either rename the first one to rapport1.txt before you continue with the cleaning procedure, or attach it here before you continue with the cleaning procedure. When you're finished, be sure to attach both of these logs for us to look at.

After you finish the above please continue with the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST and attach the requested logs when you're finished.

If you have any questions ask!

    thanks for the advice

this arvo i was ABOUT to do exactly what you instructed me to, and i noticed upon booting up that there was an error message after the XP splashscreen, telling me something along the lines of:
"your user isn't working, i'm putting you a generic one until i can fix it"

it then proceeded to boot up, and instantly froze
i then turned the pc off via the power switch, and it got stuck in BIOS
i then reset the pc and tried again, and it booted up as it normally would
however, a black screen came up telling me it didn't start up properly, and gives me these options

    Run in Safe Mode
Run in safe mode with Networking
    Run using last Windows Settings
    Run Windows Normally

each option give me either a plie of script which doesn't do anything (which then locks up and resets) or it continues to start up, only to have it cycle through its usual deal. but before it gets to the XP splashscreen, it shows a split second of a blue screen of death, then reboots and starts the cycle again.

i haven't been able to get into my OS at ALL, and its QUITE FRUSTRATING

    CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!?!
    (thanks in advance :))

    Hi gooney47,
Not pretty. :( It sounds like you got hacked.

Do you have an XP cd handy? If so, put it in before you start up the computer and then start it and allow it to boot from cd. ( If it doesn't boot automatically from the cd, then you'll have to change the boot sequence in your BIOS. There's a message at the bottom of the screen during boot up which tells you which key to hit to go to the BIOS. Once you get to that menu, you can change the sequence so the computer will boot first from cd. )

Once you get into the cd, choose install and click on F8 for agreement. Then when it finds the previous install, click on R and allow it to repair.

If you don't have a cd, you can borrow one for the repair, but it needs to be the same as what you have. That is, if you have XP home, it needs to be XP home. If it has SP2 with it, it needs to have SP2 with it.

You can get additional information about a repair install here: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option (repair install)

Let me know how this goes!

    oh fantastic :yum

i've had this problem before, where i installed Xp beforehand, and i got the stupid message telling me that the users were corrupted because i had added too much data too quickly.... grr

however, i put in another HDD and installed XP on that, and it seemed to boot up fine...
when i went to repair, it gave me all this jargon, and i had no idea what to do...

    confusing i must say...

anyway, will give your suggestion a fang

    cheers, Abri
