hi ya I am trying to install wmp 11, for some reason yesterday it decided to come up with the following error message when I try to use it. "windows media player is not installed properly and must be re-installed. do you want to install it from the microsoft web site." so i re-installed it however when I try to launch it, it comes up with the same message. could someone help me sort this out

    Thanks

Can you check the Event Viewer for any error codes or event ID numbers? In WinXP, right click My Computer, select Manage, click the plus sign next to Event Viewer, and look through the System log and the Application log. Look for any errors, especially Windows Media Player errors.... In Vista, I'm pretty sure the Event Viewer is found the same way.

ok, I checked the event viewer and did not find anything in application log however found the same 6 listings under system :

Service 'WMPnetworksvp' did not start correctly because CoCreateInstance (WindowsMediaPlayer) encountered error 0x800703e6. if possible reinstall Windows Media Player

    Hope this helps

Are you trying to update WMP from a previous version you had or is this the original installed version and you are trying to do a repair?

After doing a bit of searching (found nothing at Microsoft), it seems that the error 0x800703e6 is commonly related to either faulty memory, or a licensing issue usually associated with XP validation/activation.... I'm not sure if this helps.... maybe run an in depth memory diagnostic? Maybe a system restore or a safe OS re-install would fix the problem, or try running the system file checker: sfc /scannow at the command prompt (be sure your XP installation disc is in the CD drive)....

musksniper I was trying to reinstall and then fresh install.

dlb, I would prefer not to touch the os as besides this everything is running perfectly. as for file checker I dont have the disk, when we moved house and it disappeared with some other office stuff (dodgy removalist)

dlb's SFC suggestion would probably do the trick. I had a very similar problem in the past and SFC fixed it. I would borrow a disc (I don't think you need the key for SFC to run) or if you have a recovery partition you don't need the disc at all.
