Which motherboard do you have? They may have an overclocking application. If it's a laptop or branded desktop like Dell then you might not be able to. The main thing is to keep watch on your CPU's temperature as that's the main killer and overvolting your memory is even easier so don't go plugging in voltages willy nilly based on someone's posts as not every board/CPU combo is the same.

I've got my Q6600 up to 3GHz with the stock heatsink/fan.

Well, my first question is 'Why do you want to overclock'? Anyways, that's a good board to OC and they have their own version of a Windows based OC app called 'ASRock OC Tuner' which can get you going in the right direction. I don't know this app but it better show you various temperatures and voltages. If not then grab CPU-Z from the front page here.

Main thing is to go slowly, start with OCCT to see how capable your entire machine is, let it run for an hour. It will give you reports at the end.

There are tons of guides out there and I can't suggest one over the other, The best ones are those that isolate each part of your system and you go with baby steps as you don't want to fry anything.;)
