Wondering if the machine is clean

    Greetings.

    I'm working on a friend's computer that was infected with some malware and was causing an x50 BSOD. That initial problem seems to be fixed after I have followed all of the instructions in the README. However, I've attached the log files and was hoping that someone could check and make sure the machine is clean since it did find a rootkit and other malware.

    Also, my friend had McAfee and Norton installed on this machine at one time and I was wondering if someone could verify that they both are indeed completely removed from looking at the logs?

    Thanks so much for your help!

    First off, it is a very bad idea to allow all users to have Admin. privileges!!!

    I do trust you plan on putting an AV program on this system asap?

    There is little to do:
    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\2Q757bFxJ7S
    C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Application Data\PE1i1s15qs
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\2Q757bFxJ7S
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\3060145843
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\3121143946
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\2Q757bFxJ7S
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3060145843
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\3121143946
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PE1i1s15qs
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\2Q757bFxJ7S
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\3060145843
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Templates\3121143946
    c:\windows\Hxuquxabo.bin
    c:\windows\Khalafiyupa.dat

    Driver::
    McAfee.com VirusScan Online Realtime Engine

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now install an AV program.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    First...

    Like I said in my first post...it's a friend's machine! :-D

    And yes...my original plan was to clean his machine...remove remnants of McAfee and Norton, and then install Avast! and ZoneAlarm for him.

    Okay...so I ran into a snag. I created the file and drug it onto ComboFix. CF updated fine and started to run just fine...and then it rebooted. However, when it restarted I got a BSOD (IRQ_ NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL). I've attached the minidump in case it will be helpful. I've also attached the only log that seems to have been created with a close timestamp. The two logs you asked for don't seem to have been created. Also, I haven't gotten to the Avast! install or anything yet either.

    What should I do?

    Did you re-run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat? If not, please do so and attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip

    I just ran the GetLogs.bat and I received the same error DURING the running of it. I've attached the zip file with the logs but I'm not sure if they are new logs or the logs left from yesterday (I don't think today's .bat finished running before the crash.

    It was another IRQ_ NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL error, specifically on mbr.sys.

    So I guess the .bat file is causing the crash?

    (The minidump is attached to my previous post.)

    Getlogs.bat ran fine. And I am not seeing anything wrong with the MBR. Let's do this:

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Well, I ran the avenger and it rebooted...but when it rebooted and I selected the user I've been using it gave some error (for half a second that I couldn't read) and then rebooted again. It started fine that time though. But THEN, after I ran CCleaner for the temp files, I ran the GetLogs.bat again and I got the same BSOD when I did so.

    I've attached the two logs you requested along with the minidump.

    Seriously, thanks for your help on this!!

    Strange that Avenger says the files do not exist, but they still show in the newfiles log.

    I would also like to know exactly what the BSOD error message is.

    Run SAS and MBAM on each user account and attach any that show any malware ( identify the user account please).

  10. risingTide

    risingTide Private E-2

    Okay. SAS did not find anything on any of the 4 accounts. MBAM did not find anything on the account that I ran everything on before (Steve), but did find 1 item on each of the other accounts. I have attached those logs below with the name of the account as part of the filename.

    I don't know any other way to do that other than attaching the minidump file which I have done a few posts earlier (it won't let me do it again since the file is identical). If there is a better way please tell me and I will gladly do it.

    Thanks!

    You right click My Computer / properties / Advanced / Startup and Recovery and untick the box for automatically restart. Then when you have a BSOD it will display what the error is.

    Log into the Administrator account and run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Attach the new log.

    I've attached the new MBlog file and also a picture of the BSOD (in three other zip files.)

    If you need anything else let me know!

    Tell me again why there is no AV program installed??

    Let's try Combo again:

    Because I'm fixing this machine for a friend and he had had McAfee installed so I wanted to completely remove it before I installed a better AV program.

    Okay...I ran everything as you said below and this time I didn't receive a BSOD. Good show. I installed Avast! as my AV program and ran a pre-boot scan as part of your process below. It found 3 items; I moved them all to the Chest (even though one was a windows file) and also attached the Avast! log as well as the other two requested logs to this post.

    Thanks!

    Looks like that did it. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Awesome! :)

    Thanks for your help!

    Just out of curiousity, what do you think the cause was of the BSOD? What exactly fixed the problem?

  17. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    I really am not sure. There was no malware infecting the MBR, but maybe something was slightly corrupt and running the mbrfix may have straightened it out.

  18. risingTide

    risingTide Private E-2

    Fair enough. Oh, and is okay that I just moved those 3 files to the Avast! chest, or should I delete them?

  19. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    One was in the Combo quarantine folder, another in the system restore folder, so deleting them is fine but the second will only be removed when you toggle system restore.

  20. risingTide

    risingTide Private E-2

    I've toggled system restore and I'm all clean.

    Thanks again!! :)
