Hi, thank you for viewing my problem.
*Please note I have read the steps, I cannot follow them due to being unable to get further than the safe mode screen then PC freezing*

Briefly: I went in hospital for 3 days, came out, found computer on, monitor off, the computer was frozen (it was like that for the full 3days! Both my husband and my 4yo son were on it). I re-started it,then the mouse went mad, I suspected a trojan probably through e-mail so tried to do AVG scan, it froze, re-booted, tried to do on-line scan through Norton it froze, tried to update AVG it froze... *sigh* then on the next re-boot it said couldn't find registry files & also seeking drivers... OK to further complicate problems we just moved so my: system's disk, cd-key & back-ups are all packed away somewhere safe  In the start-up I've set it to boot with the CD-RW .

    System:
    Asus Desktop
    Pentium III, 1000 ghz
    Windows ME
30 GIG Seagate HDD (with 80% resources available!)
256 MB RAM (42MB shared with video)
    floppy
    CD 52x (slave)
    CD-rw 12x/32x/48x (master)

    Software:
AVG personal (was up to date)
Sygate Firewall personal (set to "medium" level)
    Ad-aware
    Highjack this
    CClean
    AVERT
(plus more which allude me right now, however none of them conflicted with the others & all were up-to-date)

*Please note I've had this system for nearly 6 years, kept it clean and un-clogged by junk, no games, no MP3, no unknown downloads, not even any pop-ups. DESPITE being WinME it has "always" run without ANY problems or without showing any signs of being unstable until I was hospitalised as mentioned above!

One of my problems is that the computer I'm using right now is a laptop with no floppy, so can't make rescue disk as the on-line downloads all seem to be for floppy. I did manage to find a boot disk download for CDs (bootdisk.comDOS tools for CD) on so downloaded that and got into DOS with it. I ran (from DOS) checkdisk & scandisk no problems, no errors or damaged files were found. I tried to copy some of the files I needed from c: to D: but either I can't remember my DOS commands properly or it's not recognising the CD drive (which is odd as I used it for the boot disk) after running through all the checks (memcheck ect...) I also tried going to safe-mode but it just freezes once I'm in there. (I tried doing the alt+ctrl+del which brings up the screen and shows NO applications running) I can't do anything in safe mode the "start" button isn't even visible the only option is "shut down". I hope I'm being accurate enough...

I have thousands of pictures on there (trips, family ect...) some I need to access sooner than later aside from the pics there's a few files I want to keep & well there's e-mail adrress books ect... My current goal is to get my pictures off!! The rest can wait for a real clean-up. Once I have the files I need, I can re-format, this desktop was ear-marked to become my son's (4yo) for his CD-games.

I also don't want to transfer files to my new laptop until I know all the trojans, rookits ect... are GONE!) As above this laptop has no floppy & most of the programs I find to try and fix the problem with the desktop are not compatible with the laptop running Windows XP-2 *sigh* So downloading has been tricky at best. Please help me find a way to burn CDs/or fix the problem with the files I need to start tracking down the problems.
I'm in New Zealand so I might be posting at odd times. Please bear with me I'll try to answer any questions. ANY help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thx
    Leafy

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

You problems do not really sound like malware. As such I'm going to move this to the Software Forum where someone can try to help you with this. For the safety of your data on the affected PC I would just back it up immediately. Either backup to your laptop if you can do this from your DOS boot mode or another thing to do would be to buy an inexpensive harddisk large enough to support a quick reinstall of your OS and still have room to copy the data from your original drive. What you would do is slave the old hard disk to the new drive which would be the master. No price can be place on personal data, especially photos of friends and families etc. So the cost of buying another hard disk should not be a problem.

If doing this myself, I would not buy a cheap small hard disk. I would look for a sale on a larger newer drive that is compatible with your PC and buy it. You could always use the storage space.

Ok I do have an 80GB HDD around somewhere that was going to be going into it along with some more RAM & XP upgrade. However we just moved and that's my major problem all my stuff is packed away somewhere I can't re-install as I don't know where my disks are. This place is 1/3 the size of one we moved from still trying to figure out where things are? I'm not sure I want to sacrifice a new HDD (even if I can find it) if this is a virus, malware, rookit ect... I suspected as soon as I mentioned WinME as the OS that would be what the first to get the blame that's why I did mention that the system up until now ran flawlessly for nearly 6 years (so in Me terms probably means I got the lemon that ran properly! ;) . I'm not convinced that it's the problem so would very much like to try and get a rescue CD done just to make sure if not, can I run any of the other programs in DOS? Like AVG ect... at the very least can someone point me out to a site with DOS commands as I am VERY rusty in this area it's been a long, long time since I did anything in DOS. Thx Meanwhile I'll go tear apart more boxes just in case I get lucky and find all my stuff.
