wont boot in safe mode

winxp

got a virus that killed sb s&d, avast, sygate

got rid of them

tried to reboot in safe mode

got a hal.dll error

did the bootcfg /rebuild

thought I fixed it

needed bootdisc to get win normally

still cant identify the problem

still wont boot on its own
or in safe mode

I dont have an xp cd
for it came with the pc. .

Try the steps at this ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ link. The bootcfg/rebuild is part of it, but there's other steps too.... it's worked in the past. Or you can try a safe re-install of Windows. Good luck!!!!

EDIT- I just re-read your post... w/o the CD, you're kind of stuck. Check the Drive Utilities or Data Recovery sections here at MajorGeeks; you just might find something of use. Sorry I can't be of more help....

I tried to use the recovery thing
and now I am stuck

ntldr is compressed
press ctrl + alt + del
to reboot

its a vicious cycle

You may want to make a post in the Malware section. Be sure to look at the READ AND RUN ME FIRST thread for there is information they will need you to give them. Work through as much of it as you can before you post. I found this information on another site on hal.dll and maybe you haven't cleaned all the nasties from the computer.
