After I came home and tried turning on the laptop that was working fine when I left it said something about put in boot disk and push any key so I figured something was wrong with the mbr. I used my recovery partition to access command prompt and fixed it, bootrec /mbr now when it turns on it says missing operating system.

    Hey there,

I dont have a fix for your mbr related issue?

Does your system have a hidden partition, with a sytem image on it?
Some of these have a full rebuild (which tries?) to keep your files intact and another is a destructive restore, worst case scenairo options here by the way? Its usually accessed by pressing one of the Function keys about p.o.s.t time. I'd suggest checking on the net for you model, see if it has a hidden partition, to save stabbing at keys needlessly.

It does but now that i tried fixing the boot record when i push f11 for a system recovery it just says no operating system. The previous boot record must of had something telling the bios where the recoveryis on the diskbut now its gone. I have an xp disk that I couldputin there and access command prompt,is there anyway I can simply reverse what I did?

I just realized when I fixed the boot record I was on the x partition (RECOVERY) so that ****ed it up, Im trying to repair the boot record on the c:\ whichwill hopefully allow me to access vista. ONce imdone so how would i go about restore the previous boot record on the x partition?

    Hey there,

Are you positive that the restore partition is no longer available.

Awhile ago I worked an a rather annoying Packard Bell, in the bios i had found an option for a different hard drive format wasnt fat32.. if i recall it may have been a earlier format..anyways I had almost written off the unit because it still had issues after a clean install.

After selecting this Bios option the repair install type recovery was then available using F11 to access it, your laptop may be different.

Hope the same applies for you, and the partition is still available. It is a hidden partition and hopefully its still there for you to access, I had formatted the whole drive a couple of times was sure no way was there anything there just tried the repair option one last time ... I had noted the HDD hadnt formatted to its full capacity..it was only a Xp home unit with a 40GB but would format to about 35 odd gig, a bit to small and thats why i tried.

As for restoring the original restore partition, if it is gone, that info will probably be available via the laptops manufactuers website...they may even have a dvd available...? to send you if its still a relatively new model.

Whatever I did caused it so that when I pushed f11 it cant seem to find the drive anymore. It has to do with the mbr because it worked before I attempted to fix it. I have a disk, but its not the right one but still allows me to access a command prompt, is there anyway to restore what I have done, or run the restore from the command prompt because the partition is still their untouched and totally fine, although my c:\ drive says it needs to be formated, weird shit.

    Hey Guy,

Think if there is any hope its probably via the option in the bios - boot from different hard drive format type - something like NT..sorry forgotten the exact wording and unfortunately dont have the unit to refer back to.

I dont know, even if the drive is formatted, if it would remove the "hidden partition". its like some sort of hiddden partition used for restores, not recognised by a fat file or even ntfs file system to be partitioned or formatted in the first instance...?

Have a look in the bios options if you are familiar with bios's it might standout like something a bit unusual, or you might not seen before in a bios - thats what made me try it...

Really sorry cant be more accurate in this.

    G.luck with this one.:wave
