When I edit a document in Word 2000, I cannot save it. Word tells me it has a problem and has to close.

    Using XP.

The only recent change was an update to Iobit Advanced Care system.

Is there a way I can check what the error is with Word?

    Hi

Do you get any error codes and if not then look in Event Viewer and applications list for an error linked to Word and this saving issue?

What Service Pack is your XP at? and what Service Pack is your Office 200 at also?

Can you create a new doc and then save it ok?

Yes, I can save a new document, and I can edit and save it.

    Windows XP Service Pack 3.

    Error signature -- AppVer: 9.0.0.2717 ModName: mso9.dll ModVer: 9.0.0.2720 Offset: oo1d1745

    C: docume 1/owner locals 1 Temp 82c0_appcompat.txt

How do I find Event Viewer?

I tried opening a blank document and Inserting a file. It didn't work. Word Not Responding.

One person solved the problem thusly
Another person suggested a repair by two methods:

I tried changing Normal to Body Text but it still wouldn't save the edited version.

I do not have an install disk. This computer was 'used' and came with Word 2000 installed. It is licenced to me but I can't make a copy of what shows up on the first opening page.

Is there another way I can un-corrupt the document so that it will save edits. I'm looking at 300 pages with about 10 edits.

I have just downloaded Open Office. Maybe that's the way to go.

Another weird thing -- suddenly I have Trinidad as a language choice. I don't know where it came from but I don't need it and I can't delete it.

When I set UK English, it reverts to US English.

DavidGP and Plodr know more about Office than I do but it can't hurt to try to rename the Normal.dot file and see if it makes any difference. Word will just create a new one using defaults.

    Close all Office programs.

On deleting/renaming Normal.dot try pasting this %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates into an Explorer address bar and see if you see Normal.dot file. If you do then rename Normal.dot to Normal.dotold

Then try opening Word and see if you can save any changes.

Sometimes the simplest answers solve the problem. WELL DONE!

I saved it as a different document and, so far, I can edit and save.

Whew! You've saved me a lot of worry and bother as I'm under a deadline.

Brilliant! Now why didn't I think of that myself? Probably because I was in a panic.

    Thanks again.

That wasn't exactly what I meant but if saving as a new document gets you through your project great!

If it is just the one file that couldn't be saved then perhaps it was somewhat damaged. If you continue to have problems with other documents we can revisit your options later.

    Many thanks.

If another file causes problems, I'll come back.

I trust this site to sort out my computer woes and no other. You guys are great!
