When opening Word 2007 I often receive the following error message:

"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

That's it... no other message. I have run "Microsoft Office Diagnostics" and it shows no problems/errors.

    I found a solution for Excel 2007
If you have ever tried to open an excel document and received the error that says "There was a problem sending the command to the program", you can fix it by doing the following:
    1. Open Excel 2007
    2. Open the Menu in the top left
    3. Click the "Excel Options" button
    4. Click the advanced tab on the left of the options screen
    5. Under the general options uncheck the box "Ignore other application that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)"

Here is something for Word 2007 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541
specifically this section Delete the Word Data registry key

Excel 2007 works fine. It's only when I try to open Word 2007... either a new or an existing file. After I 'click' "OK" to the above message, Word never opens. I need to 'End Process' in the Task Manager. I'll try following the instruction in your link when I have some time. Thanks

Did you try this fix from Microsoft for the Word issue?

There have been a few other issues depending on what version of Windows you are running. Having the option to "Run as Administrator" checked can do this as can having it set to run in Compatibility Mode in Win7. Some printer drivers have caused a problem and switching the default printer to Microsoft XPS Document Writer has fixed it. I think i also saw a problem with having 2003 viewer installed.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you running?
What Security software are you running, make and version? (some apps have a Office Scan component that does cause issues)

Do you have multiple accounts on this PC and if so are the other accounts affected by this?

Outside chance if the info that Plodr posted doesnt fix this, is this in that DDE causes an issue, wrong registry setting and I never yet forund what causes it but this has fixed a few for me.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ ddeexec
    to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ ddeexec.bk

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ command \ command
    to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ command \ command.bk

    copied:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ command \ (Default)
    to
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ command \ Default.bk

    editted:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Word.Document.12 \ shell \ Open \ command \ (Default)
    from
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde
    to
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n "%1"

Problem resolved…. but don’t know how or why <grin>.

After returning home this evening, an unrelated issue caused me to re-boot my primary laptop (Win7), modem and router. I have 3 systems (XP Desktop, VISTA and Win7 laptops) on a home network. The modem and router are connected to the XP system.

Anyway... Word 2007 now appears to be working properly, along with everything else. Guess one always needs to remember Windows Basics... when everything else fails --- REBOOT <grin>.

    Thanks
