I am having a problem with Microsoft Word (Office XP Pro), it only wants to start in safe mode. Here is what happens.

I try to start word, and I get the message "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close..." So I choose 'Recover my work and restart word'.
Then I get the message "Word failed to start correctly last time. Starting word in safe mode will help you correct....." So then I start Word in safe mode.

This is what I have done to try and fix it.

I went to disabled items (under 'About Microsoft Word') to see if there was anything there, and there was 1 document, which I enabled.
Then I searched this problem on microsoft.ca, and I found something about a conflict with McAfee, but I don't have that program (I use Avast 4 Pro).
I then uninstalled Office, ran regclean, cleanmgr, cleaned out my temp folders, & went into the registery editor and deleted the branches of Microsoft Office. Then I reinstalled Office.

None of that worked, and now I get this message after I try to start in safe mode: "Word automatically made changes to the Normal document template. Do you want to load it?" If I click no, then i go through the whole cycle again. If I click yes, then it opens word in safe mode, and on the Document Recovery I see "Normal".

    any ideas?

Have you tried deleting the normal.doc template, close down Word, reboot, then re-open it. Word will automatically create a new normal.doc template.

Yup. I just get the same errors.
And to Matacumbie (who replied below, but I'm just editing this instead of adding another reply), yes I tried the detect and repair :)

I know this sounds silly after reinstalling Office but try the Detect and Repair under the Help menu.

    It's worked before. :)

    Could be the plugins.

Someone on a Windows computer will have to give you the folder path to disable them though.
