I know everyone will :roll eyes: over this, but my Dad is giving me an ancient puter for the grandkids to use playing games. This is fine, even with Win95, who cares? But I thought I could use it to write fiction in a separate room from hubby surfing internet on our WinXP laptop (we aren't going wireless, so that's not a solution, trust me).

I tried using Open Office on XP laptop but couldn't figure out how to make docs accessible to others in critique group who use Word, so I don't want to try that learning curve again b/c life's too short.

Someone in a post I Searched for said to use Wordpad, but that doesn't save the formatting, to best of my experience.

--->And now (drumroll) the actual question: If I use Word on the 95 puter, will others using 2000 (which is what I have on my XP puter, too long story to 'splain here) or XP be able to open docs, or is there a download of an app to convert it?

Thanks, and I apologize for being too impatient to figure this out thru trial & error!

    Hi

Any doc created in word in .doc format can be opened on any version of office on any windows OS version, so your fine, you may need the Office CD if a specific converter is not installed but Word95 to Word2000 should already be installed.

Have you tried saving the file as a Word document from Open Office? (File/Save As...)

    Yes.

Word is forward compatible but not backward compatible. Make sure if you are using Word later than 95 to save in original 95 format, if you want to use Word 95 to read them.
