    Can anyone tell me if WordPad has a 'spell-check'? If so, where might I find it? And if not, I can only wonder, why the heck not??

    Thanks ...

    Unfortunately, Windows Wordpad doesn't have any spell checker and I don't have the answer for you as to why not.

    If you have Microsoft Word or Corel Wordperfect, it can spell check the Windows' Wordpad for you.

    Here's a link and some info about it:http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000768.htm

    BTW: I checked out the 3 spell checkers mentioned in that link and they're not free.

    Why not? Because companies dont give away full featured software for free. Spell check is one of a few reasons people pay for office or another word processor. Or even download a free full featured on.

    Ok thanks, but I'm not certain I follow. We "paid" for this when we bought the PC - no? I mean, I think we have (somewhere on this PC) Word (we'd have to have to have it, to have WordPad - right?? I mean, WordPad comes with Word - right?) - does it (Word) have a spell-check?

    Thanks again ...

    Thank you sir ... I have tried OO (and I think it's a fine program), on my PC at home which has 250 Gigs of space, but unfortunately, I'm trying to "set-up" (maintain/administer) my folks PC here, and it is an older (6 years) unit, and only has a 20 Gig HD, and I am "trying" to keep down the installations of larger programs, which OO is (IMHO). It is an option, but perhaps after I clear-out some other junk off their PC here - thank you again!

    No microsoft office word, and wordpad are two seperate applications, wordpad comes with every single windows install, and word may come as a trial or installed by the manufactor, but its not a windows default application like wordpad.

    As Colemanguy said, not so. And, just to be perfectly clear on this point, even you got Word and installed it, that's not going to add spell-check functionality to WordPad. I installed Office 2007 about 6 weeks ago. That has not affect whatsoever on WordPad.

    This is what the link below says about spell checking ability in WordPad.
    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000768.htm

    Personally, I don't have MS Word but Corel's Wordperfect and by opening the (saved) WordPad document in Wordperfect, I can spell check it by clicking on "Tools" and then clicking on "Spell Checker". It's an after the fact thing and obviously doesn't spell check while writing a document in WordPad.

    Which is nothing, as far as I can tell.

    That's what I think as well.

    @ grc123 I know you have Firefox's spell checker built in. Did you ever notice if your emails do a spell check for you? If so, write an email, pop up the Wordpad, highlight the text and copy and post it in Wordpad and save the document. Then cancel the email.

    Perhaps Firefox spell checks your email through the ISP? Perhaps it's a lot of work, but if the space on the HD is limited and don't want or can download Open Office (lots of MB), this may be another solution without having to add MB to the HD?

    I do have spell checker in the ISP emails I write, so it works doing it this way.

    Hi GRC

    If you don't wish to add a large program to your parents PC for word processing then this small application in Tiny Spell its Free version is ok, not perfect by any means but it work on the fly in any text box, be that Wordpad, Notepad, internet searches or even this Message box I'm typing your reply in on the forum.

    What it does is to flag up the word your typing and wrong so when you click the resulting yellow flag it will as in ( 2nd image below ) show you suggestions, if you know the word is right it allows you to add it to the dictionary.

    You can also set it to beep or make noise when a word is wrong, makes it easier to stop and check spelling.

    Or better still go with this freebie in Jarte, which is based around Wordpad and does have spellchecking built in, not fantastic looking in the GUI dept but works... features list.

    Well, I see Halo just provided several solutions. I was going to mention another one, so I'll go ahead and mention it. It's AbiWord, a simple, free, word processor with a built-in spell checker.

    I already mentioned that several posts ago.

    No, back in post #4, he said he thought he would have Word if he had WordPad because they are both loaded on Windows systems. Of course, the rest of know that's not true.

    Well, sort of - only just the opposite ...
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Copy/Paste from post #4:
    "...I mean, I think we have (somewhere on this PC) Word (we'd have to have to have it, to have WordPad - right?? I mean, WordPad comes with Word - right?)"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I think my problem here, was that Word was removed from the system at one point in time or another. It WAS here - and "parts" of it still seem to remain. For instance, whenever a WordPad doc is opened on this PC, the (MS) "Word" logo jumps-up first, before/during the loading of the WordPad doc. Though I'm sure someone will inevitably tell me that this is "normal" or the usual course of action of WordPad, I HAVE Word on an install disc sent by Dell when the PC was purchased, new, six years ago.

    I was (am?) simply trying to find and decide on a smaller, simpler solution ("alternative") to it (Word) that has a spell-check - and you all have provided plenty of solutions - thank you!

    Thanks.

    No WordPad doesn't come with Word. WordPad is part of Windows and comes with any computer that is running Windows.
    Word comes with Office and might come with later versions of Works. Not all windows computers have these installed.
