If I try and save a document to Wordpad it says "Access to "file" Denied" some files it does this but others don't. It doesn't make sense. I've had to just close files without saving my work or cut and pasting things into notepad...

Any ideas on why this is happening?

    Windows 7.

This may be a "Where" issue. "Which folder are you saving the files to? Where?"

UserIDs have Rights to save files to some locations, but not others, so I'm wondering if your observed "sometimes it works, sometimes not" is a "Where Saved To?" issue.

I have been saving to an external flash drive...next time in happens I'll try and save on the PC and see if that makes any difference. I know in previous messages it said something about contacting the administrator or not having administrative privileges...but it's inconsistent, it doesn't always say that, it's so frustrating trying to figure this out if it's not constant!

...I'm the only user on my machine though.

QUICK UPDATE: 0k...............I just tried a file I thought might get the message, it said access denied, it was a file stored on my external HD and it wouldn't save back to that location BUT would save to the PC's HD, so that fixes my immediate dilemma (I can save my paper so I can go get it printed) but I should still be able to save my files where ever I want, how can I do that?

If you're encountering problems with all of these USB devices - USBs and External HDDs - then let's hope this was YOUR fault - some user behavior that might be an easy 'fix' or solution - just a slight behavior modification. (User-created problems are sooo much easier to fix than hardware!)

Are you pulling out USB devices without faithfully doing the SAFELY EJECT process?

Do you cut the power off of the External HDD while the computer's still running, but leave the ExtHDD still plugged in?

I'd consider what behaviors you use with plugging in, unplugged and unpowering the USB devices, and see if you can change those AS IF that was The Problem.

If you can duplicate the errors deliberately, it would be interesting to note what behaviors you used with the USB device immediately before the error, or the behaviors you used during the last Power Up, Insert, Disconnect, etc.

(Sadly, you are never The Only User on your computer - Windows has services all its own, and there is a Guest account. Try deleting one of Ballmer's precious fonts and you'll see who owns and runs YOUR computer! Grrrr..)
