Workaround for ISP's problems?

Okay, here are a few things you should know before I get into the problem I have.

    • I have limited knowledge of software/hardware.
    • I'm pretty sure this is where I post this, if not feel free to move this topic.
    • Do not list your answer as "switch ISP's", there are only two local providers in town and due to a clerical error I owe the other provider $5,000 (No way in heck I am paying for their screwup)
    • I may not be sure what to list (hardware/software) that may assist you in helping me figure out my problem, feel free to recommend what variables I forgot.

...Now on to the meat and butter of it

A little while ago I wanted to start port-forwarding so that I could set up a free 9 man ventrillo server, so I started learning the basics of port-forwarding on portforward.com. After hours of brain racking over trying to understand what static IP, shell commands and DNS is, I finally figured out that my ISP was preventing me from establishing a static IP address. When I contacted a service provider through a chat relay they told me that establishing a static IP address is disabled and that I needed to buy a "buisness account" with them to enjoy that luxury. Please can you help my find a way to workaround this problem, I would be very happy :-D

    • My service provider is Rogers
    • My Wireless router is an SMC and its model number is 8014W-G
    • I have both a wireless ethernet card and an integrated ethernet controller
    • My pc is very friggen old, but I do have win7 installed on it.

That is pretty much standard for most ISP's. You can't "work around" it. :(

Are you sure? If I purchase a different router do you think that would help? I'm not paying the extra $60.00 a month for a business account and even If I broke down and attempted to do this I don't own a business so I'm pretty sure they won't just let me have one.

Nope, a different router will not change anything. The ISP assigns a IP address. The only way "around" it would be to purchase a business line and increase your download and upload speeds.

The thing is I don't really care about more Kbps/Mbps or even a higher usage allowance, I just wan't a damned static address because it's required to port foward. I really hate having a dynamic address :(

why don't you setup a free account with dyndns? this is what i had to do for gaming and ventrilo for the same reason as yours. you can get a host name and the software will automatically update your ip to your host name.

If you have dial-up Internet, get used to it.
Never heard of a static dial-up, unless you NEVER turn the machine off.

    1. If they provide free hosting space for you?
    2. link from another free service.

you will just have to update the link to the new ipaddress.

I belive a dynamic address doesnt change alot if your always connected but does when you lose power or the modam does and can be changed by the service as well at there whim.

Its been a while senc i tried to set up an apache server and this was the alt to web hosting pay for view < lol

You can check the ipaddress and change it there and reidirect page to your server.

Use an off port not 80

probubly is limited to upload capability

    www.mysite.com:8080

not sure if this is simmular to what your trying to do or not/

Five thousand dollar mistake? Yeah, they should take that off. No ISP would even let the account go up that high, so hope that isn't on yer credit either. So, did you get the port forward taken care of? LT Dan
