By any chance the comp that is asking for the password is a Windows Me or 98 computer ?

Windows XP has the weird issue of not allowing to log on to networks unless the guest accoutn is enabled ! The PWL file has a registry pointer pointing towards the guest acount, in Win ME this can be avoided by changing the Windows Logon in the TCP/Ip Properties, but that feature is not avail in Win XP, you can although also try by Disabling the Welcome Screen
