I want to edit a remote file, to which I have access through Telnet or FTP, in such a way that every time I will save the file directly to the remote location, as if I was working on my own hard drive. I have both reading and writing privleges on the remote computer. How can I make it happen?

You can rename it without downloading it and uploading it again, but other than that, you're out of luck.

    If I understand correctly:

You want to edit the file remotely, without-downloading it to your hard-drive, and then save the file back to its original (or differnet location) on the remote computer?

Then, telnet is your way to go. Telnet (or ssh, which is an encrypted alternative to telnet; your server may require you to use ssh) in the remote machine, log-in with your user name and password, and then pretend you are sitting at the computer. That's basically what telnet provides.

When you see data appear on your screen, it is merely screen data, and not file data, hence the file never actually comes down your network line. If you want to use a graphical editor to edit the file, then you will need to use another program to display the graphical data. However, exactly how you do this is dependant on the OS your computer is, and the OS the server is. If you would like to know how to do this, give us this information, and we'll try and help

    regards
