I have read the earlier msg on such an infection and I get the 3 icons on my desktop and IE opeing to give a Udefender s/w but am not sure to accept. Hence following your procedure for Window cleanup to begin with.
I have problem downloading ComboFix.exe as it gives 0 bytes. Have downloaded Spybot and am running it - so slow....
Will proceed with the AVG and submit the results.
I hope you can help/advise. Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.
I think my problem as been resolved. Thanks to the detailed cleanup procedure for Windows XP. The logs from MgTools did not have any entry.
(It did not seem to require ComboFix as I could not download it by the way)

My system is ok now, but it takes a long time to boot up. Perhaps it is the SpyBot and AVG now running on the system. Is there anyway I can deactivate them running all the time.?

    Did you:
    1) run the MGTools.exe program by double clicking on it?
    Find:
    2) the
ZIP file named MGlogs.zip which you will be uploading as an attachment?

It is what we need to help you with either the malware and or the slow start problems.

    Using MGtools

    Tks for your reply TIM.
1)I had difficulty downloading ComboFix as it refused to download to the specified folder: It did download to a default folder from where I ran ComboFix. It did not open normally - gave a Dos like black window and terminated. So I dont have a LOg to attach.
    2) The S&D ran ok but gave no Report indicating there was no Malware found.
    3) I am attaching the MGTools run.
I have on my system Windows OneCare Protection : Zonealarm: McaFee: Windows Defender (not activated) :and now S&D: AVGI; wonder if the added Immunisation and schields are slowing it down. Also my Skype breaks up when talking (probably from the checks).
Is there anything I can deactivate to enable
    a) boot faster
    b) make the system faster from the multiple checks which I suspect are the problem.
Grateful for your interest and help.
    Rgds

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

First Disable Spybot's TeaTimer as requested in the READ ME

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

Uninstall either Windows Live One-care or McAfee ....you shouldn't have two anti-virus programs running.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

One last chore to do and hopefully this will be the final step:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Now run CCleaner and remove all temp files .....also yes, re-enable your anti-virus and spyware programs!

    Hi Tim
My system is working beautifully and am very happy:):):) Tks to you and Majorgeeks! I am attaching the Avenger file.

A final query from me is that I wish to save this 'state' as a Restore Point permanently. Is there anyway I can do that as most of my earlier Restores get wiped out. Is that because of
    1)limited space provision or
    2) clearing out 'personal data items' which Firefox requests on exit.
    Thanks again
    Rgds

You can increase the size of your restore data by right clicking my computer / properties / system restore and increase the size of the disc space alloted to the restore points. But first we want you to check the box ( turn off system restore) ...then reboot and go back and uncheck the box ....this will enable a new restore point.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!
