    This was just a dream....

I go to boot up my computer and see some grey graphics screen counting down. I can't figure out how to end it. I try everything. So I just click on it.rolleyes Next thing I know my computer screen is this virus-based page.

It's scrolling through tons of spam words like porn, drugs, etc and adding them to my white list. It even put red over all the eyes in my pictures.:cry

Just when I thought I'd have to take my computer somewhere for someone else to fix, I remembered I could boot into safe mode. Somehow that would fix everything.:-D

Well, I hope that you got everything sorted out, Laura.
I've had a lot of folks come to me with 'Rogue-ware', where it has virtually taken over the whole computer, pretending to be a mal-ware killer, demanding money to get rid of so-called viruses, which of course, it doesn't.rolleyes

    hahahaha

No. This was an actual nightmare I had last night while I was sleeping. LOL

My computer is squeaky clean, well 'cept for maybe a few suspect cookies. :-D

In my dream, safe mode fixed it all. Too bad it's not that easy, right?

I think I've been deleting too many spammers of late.

:-D Well, honestly I wasn't trying to cry wolf since I figured my title said that it was a nightmare.

It's definitely given me a good chuckle that people thought it was real. I've edited my first post.

    Sorry guys!:-oLOL

It would have been quiet a virus if it had been real!

@TimW...it sounds like fruitcake takes a while to ferment (or something). It'll be ready for you in 2012. hehe

When I am not dreaming about "CAKE", I sometimes do dream about doing the malware logs. Charlie is usually there telling me I am doing it wrong!! roflmao

Sounds like Laura could use some rum-soaked fruitcake (without the fruitcake) after that "scary" experience.
Would be scary if it really happens to you, though.
Can anybody say "Pull the plug." Quickly.

It was the Win7 update to my wife's laptop that never was done as she had too many documents and would not part with it long enough to wipe and reinstall. HP Tech was nice enough to wipe it when sent in for service (funny I was able to pull all the files off the "faulty drive" though...:confused). All is well now until the real nightmare begins- her complaints about not liking Win7....;)

My wife is legally blind and insists that her magnification software is ALL she can use. I set large fonts and icons and that created a conflict that confused Win7. I showed her zoom in Compiz, but she screams when I get within 2 feet of her system with a Linux disk.:-D

And then you think of CAKE and it's all better? :-D

Why yes, yes I could, hrlow...could you throw in a little mint, lime and sugar, please? :-D

lmao...I know this is probably old, but I've never heard it and it made me laugh.

    :-o

You were afraid you were going to help me, weren't you Em? LOL

Hahaha...at least you know how to keep your nightmares at bay, BOOM...keep the wife happy! heh

Glad they rescued the documents. I'm sure she'll wind up liking Win 7 in spite of herself. She just has to get used to it.:)

Worst nightmare recently: I was at the airport, ten minutes until the flight leaves, and for some reason I couldn't get my currency exchanged.
Then I opened my passport and it didn't have a photo in it.

Good thing it was only a dream, huh Laura? LOL

I think I am the queen of weird dreams though.. I've had end of the world dreams, city flooding dreams, flying (in tubes) dreams..

My oddest so far (aside from the one where I got off the bus and didn't pay and the cops were after me LOL) I was driving a small sports car down a dirt road and it started to rain.. I made this u-turn to go back on the abnormally WIDE street because the rain was turning the dirt into mud.. so I'm driving and all of a sudden this large (lake?) pond appeared in the middle of the road and I drove right into it. The car submerged and disappeared into the water and I emerged pulling a white horse..and a man in a wheelchair. There were two men waiting when I came out of the water and were asking me questions.. That's all I remember. and no, I didn't have anything weird to eat that night either! :-D

  31. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

Did the 2 men that were waiting for you have a jacket for you?

I've had some really really REALLY weird ones, but thinking that one beats them all!

I always hate the ones where I'm not prepared for some final test. I have had the one many times of being back in college (university), needing to take a final exam and having no idea where the exam is being taken because I haven't been to class all term. :(

I've never had any of those "test" dreams.. I guess they would be too normal for me LOL

    :-D I don't even have a TV..so there :p

Leave the ice cream out of this.. it's never hurt anyone!! LOL

Glad I was able to make you feel "normal" :p

My worst nightmare just became a reality.

I started the PC up this morning and while it got up to speed i went for some coffee, came back and promptly knocked the coffee off my desk and the whole mug went into the PC via the extractor fan holes in the top.

There was a lot of hissing and cracking then the power in the house went off, i pulled the power to the PC and reset the fuses in the house.

After i stopped kicking myself i opened the case and found i have fried a lot of components in there so i am now using my wife's laptop (with her kind permission)

It is going to take a while to get the PC back up and running as i do not have the spares to re-build it so i will have to hope Santa is kind to me this year.

OMG Bill!!! My condolences.:cry Hmm, may as well go with 580's now.;) Seriously, this has to be the worst case scenario ever! Don't write anything off until you actually test the cards elsewhere, see if you can find a local tech with a proper solvent tank, your rig is worth it!

Condolences from one who learned that expensive lesson. :cry

Sorry to hear that Bill. Hopefully, as augie said, you'll be able to salvage some of the components.

ERRGH!...That aint good, Bill!!:( One reason why I have my drinks on a separate coffee table than the computer gear. Otherwise I would had shorted gear out a few times, I admit.
Yeah, like Augie said, as long as you let the circuitry, etc. dry out completely and maybe use a solvent to get rid of any dried coffee, you may be able to resurrect most of it. A not uncommon task that goes through the workshop, here. Got a laptop that's had a dousing in Cool-Aid in there, a.t.m.rolleyes

Good luck with all that, man. Not a great time of the year to have 'puter expenses, either.
(Yeah Laura, I thought of your little saga when I first read the O.P.;))

@Phantom What is used today as a solvent? It used to be Freon in a refrigerator back in the early 80's. I still love that smell, besides the smell of rosin in the morning!:-o:-D

  46. BILLMCC66

    BILLMCC66 Bionic Belgian

I have got Isopropyl alcohol to do the job.

  47. augiedoggie

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

That'll do the trick as long as it's over %80 pure. I've had issues with lesser concentrates. Yes, I've poured beer over my machine!:-o:cry:-D

Freon's still a good solvent as is Isopropanol. Sometimes I use Tetrachloroethylene , (carefully) for stubborn foreign substances.
