    Sat there last night - computer just downloading i was in bed when the gf smelt something burning!! i cucndt smell it but upon coming over to computer i realised it was that!!

    PC's fine now but the graphics card was about 69degree's idle...

    I've recently changed rooms and pc is in diff place. its on the floor kinda next to the wall...so could that be it?

    it seems my graphics card is high temp but everything else is fine!! so thats just down to case cooling isnt it?

    ive also noticed a 15fps drop in cs: source test! :<

    Is there anyways i can cool my gfx card down/anything down.?

    I'm going to get pics of my current pc setup n get them ul asap.

    bbs with pics!

    Just ran cs:s stress test 2 times, on first time 4xaa 16x af 125.89fps..2nd time 4aa 8xaf 125.89fps...

    Temperature of graphics card - 75degree's

    Sorry forgot specs!!

    Yeouch!

    400mhz ram. running at ddr333 due to overclocking

    You put this down, and this confuses me...if you have DDR400 running at 333MHz, thats UNDERclocking... which would be alright...unless you've actually overclocked, and it has sped up your GPU, and is causing it to overheat. You may want to consider turning it down until you can get better cooling.

    You could leave the case sides off, and that will help, but you should invest in some cooling. There's a few VGA cooling solutions at this link, for example.

    75c under load is within spec for the 7800GTX.

    Heck, 83c is...

    Sure its the card you were smelling?

    but you dont speed up your GPU by increasing your processor do you?

    i thought this wud speed up my cpu and as i higher the mhz the memory speed increases back up also?

    Not certain how yours would work, as I'm relatively new to overclocking, but on my board, the GPU and memory frequency increase as you up the CPUs clock speed. If you have a voltage/frequency section in your BIOS, I would recommend that you check there and see what's what.

    Adrynalyne brings up a good point, though. I hadn't checked that! If 75c is acceptable, then I wouldn't mess with it.

    I can't find a link anymore, but yeah, they run hot. Mine has hit 82c before under load, and is ok. I was concerned too, until I found some reviewers experiencing the same thing. I think that was one of the improvements for the 7900 series.

    I have a MSI 7800GT in idle mine is 47C and in overload i reach 75C i guess
    those GTX run pretty high... i have 4 fans in my case...

    You drop the ram speed so that that you can change the cpu:ram ratio and allow your cpu to oc and not push your ram. For example

    2ghz a64, 200mhz ram

    ratio is 10:1

    You increase to 2.1ghz, your ram is now running at 210mhz. Push it to 2.4 ghz, ram is running at 240mhz and will most likely fail.

    Drop the clockspeed of the ram and adjust the ratio

    2ghz a64, 166mhz ram

    ratio is 12:1

    2.1ghz->175mhz
    2.2ghz->183mhz
    2.4ghz->200mhz

    So now you're not underclocking your ram.

    I had the same problem with my Leadtek 7800 GTX I had to down clock it so it stayed cool but it works better then it did when it was over clocked because its colder and it dont bog down from the heat.

    Facrtory Overclocked the engine clock at 490MHz and memory clock at 1.3GHz (vs. standard 430MHz and 1.2GHz)

    It wont matter much though when i get my new cooler :)

    I have that same exact card and am running at 67c.

    Screw hole to screw hole should be 120mm,if its 110mm that will bea 120mm fan mount give or take

    My honest advice would be before buying,changing or adding anything to the computer would be to find out what was burning before,you could throw money at it and hope it goes away but if the burning smell was coming fron the computer something is on its way out no matter how much extra cooling you add

    I would leave the computer stock and run as many stress programs as you can 3d mark 2005 for eg.,try and break the computer to recreate the problem,its the same pholosephy as overcharging a gun to test it,if it doesnt blow with double charge it isnt gonna blow

    Two things can happen the computer will sail through the tests or something will break in which you can RMA it and get a new one,better it happen now and be sure than let it run as it is and be unsure if your computer is running fine

    You can then have complete peace of mind, MHO :)

    Hi

    I have an XFX 7800 GTX runs 54c idle and I've seen it go up to 83c while playing Call of Duty 2 (with dual processor patch). I have 2 intake fans, 1 exhaust, 1 power fan, and Zalman CNPS9500 fan for my CPU.

    Had this card for several months now with no problems or smell of burning but thinking of getting a VGA cooler like the one you ordered, so I am interested to find out if the one you gets makes much of a difference?
