i have seen some say you need a hub and some say you need an ethernet adapter. i have a dell 2350 with xp home. it has a built in ethernet adapter. the other comp is for my son. we homeschool him and his is an HP with 98.

i downloaded the microsoft network helper and it said i needed 2 cables and an adapter. i guess i just wanted to know from someone who isnt out to sell me something and has some hands on experience.

    thanks for the help..

Someone who isnt out there..... :D :D

You need at least two network cards, and a crossover cable, if you want to do it the half-arsed way.

    Network cards= ethernet adapters.

Connect the cable between the cards in each computer.

    Start there.

Error 721: Remote PPP peer or computer is not responding. If you have tried many thing other people suggest like rebooting, reloading hardware and re-installing the VPN or dial in connection, you still get the same problem. I will suggest to check the router settings and make sure TCP Port 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened. Also make sure that the router has the PPTP enabled and not firewall block the traffic. On the RAS server, check the DHCP settings.

721 The remote computer is not responding

Also check that the network card is recognized by the remote computer

We really can't work off of that little of info.

    How many machines?

    Who is the host?

    Is Internet Connection Sharing enabled?

    Can the Host connect?

What is the IP address of the other machines?

    What firewalls are installed?

    You tell me.

Error 721 is a RAS error, and deals with connecting online.

How does it relate to the networking issues in this thread?

By your own volition you said that you are not using a router.

Yet you said that you have the same issue as the original poster (still not seeing the connection between your issue and the other poster). The original poster doesn't know how to setup a network.

You also said that both don't connect to the net when you 'link together'. Not sure what you mean.

Do you mean to say that when they are networked together they are not connected to the internet?

If so, where does the Error 721 come into play? That error is strictly connecting to the internet.

If you have an internet connection problem, your best bet is to start a thread, preferably in the software forum. The original poster will probably not like the fact that their thread was hijacked.

    Chapps,
when asking for support, please start a new thread. This helps keep one person's thread free and clear of issues that aren't pertinant to the original posters question.
    Thank you.

Not trying to be a smart ass, but... there's a little somethin' wrong with yer IP addresses, my man. 192.168.0.011 looks to be invalid to me...

I think you meant to write 198.168.0.10
    and 192.168.0.11

the second one happens to be a private network address which means you are not getting out your network
