Could you guys help me on this one before I go out of my head. I have XP Pro. OS and recently an appearance of an annoying startup screen has appeared preventing total boot until I press an icon on screen. It also appears when screen saver has been running requiring me to click on icon. Its very similar to the log on window of MSN Explorer where I choose user to log on. I reinstalled XP to get rid of it which it did for a while but 36Hrs later ''Its back''. Any ideas where I can switch it off or delete as I have looked everwhere. Ps I am not the only one as my mate had it appear on his about the same time last week.

From the sounds of it it's just the logon screen when you get to select which user logs on. I'm presuming you only have one user on your machine? I don't have access to my XP machine until the end of the weekend, so can't help you from memory.

However, I did just find this link, may be of some use to you

    http://8help.ohio-state.edu/772.html

Also, try searching Google for "Windows XP login screen" if the above link doesn't help much.

    ok

In control panel there is a users applet (might have to change to classic control panel). Double-click, then 'change how users log on'. Uncheck 'use logon screen'. Hope this helps.

You need to turn on automatic login (User-Applet in the Control Panel), then you don't have to click an icon when starting the machine (Or type in username if classic).

You need to configure the screensaver i display settings, so it doesn't need a password to unlock screensaver.

OK, sorta back to ROBO's point above: I installed (way back) the Recommended Update for XP that updated the .Net files, and the logon started making me click my own name to get in, even though I had changed no CP>User>Logon settings.

I seem to recall that I checked and re-checked my Tweak UI settings and my CP>User>Logon settings, and couldn't get my machine to go back to the way it is

(the way I want it: cold boots in 20 secs, and I don't have to click anything, ever)

so I uninstalled the .Net update, and everything went back to FINE & FAST boot and logon again.

OK, so are you guys telling me that if I put in the .Net update, I can tweak the sett's again to make sure that I keep my rocket logon with no clicks required? This is a secure, one-user machine, and any logon/boot slowdowns around here get zero tolerance.

This is just one of the many areas where my knowledge of XP isn't anywhere near the expert level (he said, humbly). Advice?

    Nick,

I don't have the box checked beside Automatically Log On in Tweak UI, but my logon works fast without me having to click anything, and I get no annoying screens. If I'm not Auto Logging On, what's my kind of direct-through logon called?

In CP>Users, I have Use The Welcome Screen checked, but it says under that that I'll have to click my name, and I don't have to click anything, and I don't see the screen with my name on it at all.

That's why I asked robo a couple of posts ago in this thread about .Net. When I installed the update I suddenly had the screen and had to click my name, and that slowed my boot a lot. I dumped the .Net update.

Boy, am I feeling in need of help today.

Hi Wise wiz depending if you are the sole user of the computer you do not have to check any boxes. You only have to check the box to automatically log you in if you have more then one user and have a password enabled. You should not have uninstalled .net as a lot of software that you download from this site requires it
    :)

I starting getting that screen when I installed .NET framework.

Probably because .NET creates a new user on your system for ASP .NET. Just activate Automatic Login and it should work fine again.

    Hey, Dim'n4,

Gotta go out for dinner. If you try the Switch and it gets rid of the login screen even with .Net updated, please post that news here. It's not that I don't trust snakefoot, it's that I don't trust Microsoft.
    .................
And, Nick, I uninstalled the .Net upgrade, not the basic 1.1 (whatever) .Net install that's part of the original XP install, so I've had no trouble whatsoever with about 150 programs I have on my two drives. Very few progs require the latest .Net files.

But I'll be happy to try the .Net upgrade again, now that snake has assured me that when I reboot after the upgrade and it makes me click my name, I can kill that silly step completely by using Tweak UI's Autologin switch.

Thanks for all the help, guys!

    Success Report

    :D Snakefoot and all:

.Net 1.1 installed and no probs. The login screen I hadn't seen for months came baaack when I rebooted after the installation, and stayed there when I re-rebooted to see whether it would, so I went into Tweak UI and the Logon section (natcherly), and before I even got to the Autologon panel, I found "Show ASP ... on Welcome Screen." It was checked. (Snake, you were right! That was the probem.) I UN-checked it and closed TUI and rebooted, and the irritating, aggravating, You've-gotta-be-here-to-logon screen was a distant memory. Back to 20-sec boots with no clicking required.

    Confused

Thanks for all the replies, so I set forth with all this information and 6 hours later I am still trying, The UI in XPPowertools tweak will not install as I get this message on instalation/ ''Procedure entry point GetDLLDirectoryW could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL 32.DLL so's I'm b******d unless that can be fixed. As for the NET Update /net framework I cannot find a date to give me an inclinging what one to delete. Could you give me a bit more info as I am passing this on to my mate who is having the same prob. Ps tried all the other tips to no avail.

    toke,

If you really think the .Net update did it, and you really want to unload that, it's in Add-Remove as Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1.

BUT, I think you've got much bigger fish to fry than gettting rid of .Net 1.1, if you can't get Tweak UI to install because a basic dll is missing. You need to run a sysfile scan and fix the errors (re-install missing or corrupted sysfiles).

When the .net update installs it adds an ASP.NET user to your system so that they can control any .net software that you have installed and bill you for using it. To remove the login screen go to "user accounts" in control panel and delete the remote user that the update added. After I installed the update I couldn't even open the user accounts applet and had to delete the account through the administrative tools applet.

If you don't have any .net software you don't need the update un-install it.

By the way .net software is Microsoft's next big money making venture where you buy the software then pay them each time you use it.

It's kind of like the new games that you buy then have to subscribe to play online.
