I'm on windows XP and in the bottom left , where all the little icons are (system tray?)
there is an audio icon there, and this notice that says "Information: you just plugged a device into the audio jack!" keeps poping up , like every 2 second, it will also says"A jack has been unplugged" as well, it just goes and goes.

I have my speakers plugged in and tythe audio never fails, the sound function just fine.

    Is this an uncommon problem?

I would suggest re-installing your chipset and audio driver as a first point of call. It could also be that something maybe shorting out, hopefully someone with a bit more savvy about the elctrical componant side will jump in if my solution doesn't remedy your issue.
