sooo, my pc just randomly wouldn't start one day. I narrowed it down to the VGA went out on my mobo, so I rigged up and old mobo to my hard drive and got it up and running.

I've been able to put XP on another hard drive, and OpenSUSE 11, and Ubuntu 8.04. They all install and boot just fine.

But the one hard drive from the pc that crashed... I don't understand.

It only boots when I go into the BIOS and change the settings from "auto" to "user controlled hard drive"...something or other like that.

When it finally boots, safe mode, or regular...doesn't matter...all I get is a blotchy screen (like when you put the settings on the graphics all on extremely low..) and it says the
please select account to log in" thing... problem is, it's in the middle of the screen, and I can't see any of the accounts to log in to fix the problem.

I've tried the ctrl+i or ctrl+shift+i or whatever trick it is to select an account manually, but it won't work. any help?
