Started having problems 2 days ago. I am not sure what exactly triggered it. I use Firefox, and would search items in google, but my searches would get redirected.

I have been running noscript for months. Another user on this computer uses IE. My current AV is AVG, just upgraded to 9. I also use windows firewall and windows defender (daily).

I have been scanning my computer for the last day with other various applications and found some trojans (gdown, etc...) but apparently not fixed. I found majorgeeks.com and followed the steps listed and attached the logs.

Also, it did disable windows defender and AVG, I did restart them though.

    Thank you for any assistance,

    Dave

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Since you have a possible MBR infection. We will need to boot to the Recovery Console ( you installed it while you installed ComboFix) to remove this infection.

Now boot to the Recovery Console and run the fixmbr to clear a Master Boot Record infection that you have.

You can read the below to help you do this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

After running the fixmbr command and boot back to normal mode, continue with the below.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 5 of the READ ME

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now shutdown AVG and Windows Defended and then run ComboFix.exe again by double clicking the icon on your Desktop.

    Attach the new ComboFix log.

    How are things working now?

I haven't had a chance to apply your fix yet.

I have one question: I recently replaced the hard drive in this laptop (a Dell). I had a lot of trouble with cloning the old drive, because of the Dell recovery partition. I vaguely remember that it had to do with the MBR 2 not copying correctly. Eventually I found an application that would correctly copy all the partitions.

See any problems with performing a MBR repair on this drive?

    Thanks again!

ComboFix believes that your installation of Daemon tools is infected. It said
    Code:
    c:\windows\System32\Drivers\d347prt.sys . . . is infected!!
I suggest uninstalling Daemon tools and then rebooting. Then look for the c:\windows\System32\Drivers\d347prt.sys file and delete it if found. Then continue with the below.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I deleted Daemon tools and followed the rest of the steps. MGtools stalls out during it's run. I attached the log I found anyway (it may be wrong, I accidentally ran MG tools first on the desktop. I stopped that then ran it from c:) .

The google search redirect is still happening.

Thanks again for all your help,

    Dave

Not sure what you mean since the log seems complete. Are you sure that it was not just still running. Some scans take awhile to run just like with an antivirus program.

    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please attach this log to your next reply.

sorry for the delayed reply, I was having (unrelated?) problems. I booted to windows ok, then it crashed...bsod. It would not even boot in safe mode...when watching it load it would always stop at ...mup.sys. Anyways, I eventually did a repair with the Dell xp install disk (sp2) and did all the sp3 updates. Currently not experiencing any problems described earlier, so I guess it is fixed !?!?!. I attached the log as requested.

    Thanks,

    Dave

You're welcome. Okay that last log was clean anyway.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
