XP crashed...need help

I downloaded and tried to run Spyware Doctor. After about a couple minutes it detected a trojan horse and then came the blue screen. Now windows won't load and I get "registry cannot load the hive. systemroot\system32\config\software" message. The machine is about 8 years old and I could not find the windows disc. My nephew works for Dell and he let me access a site where I could burn a new disc. I switched the boot order to cd first, but the disc won't load. I tried the one time boot menu, but that did not help. Any help would be appreciated.

 

tried every mode possible to log on. I have since tried a neighbors Xp pro recovery disc and it will boot that disc, but its the wrong disc. I have a compaq with xp home service pack 2.

 

Did it just detect the infection then die or was it during the removal/disabling of the infection that the machine died?
you could if you liked, got a New HDD, install a fresh copy of XP, add the old HDD as a slave to recover your date once you do a few malware scans etc. to make sure you do not infect your new hdd.

 

So did you burn the iso to CD using Nero or similar, or did you just copy the file to the CD? Former will boot, latter will not.

 

Ok, I went ahead and used the xp pro disc, ran a chkdsk/r and that got me back in windows and everything is still ther...yeah! I geuss I need to go to the removing malware thread now. Thanks.
