    Hi all.
    Please help.

XP SP3, Duel boot system with Ubuntu. (I am a newbie to Linux)

I booted in the morning and the Desktop was/is frozen. Mouse will move sometimes and if I click on an icon the cursors goes into thinking mode and freezes. Keyboard is also frozen or disabled.

I can not boot into safe mode. I get a WDFLDR.SYS error. If I try to boot from the XP CD it will Error eventually with different errors each time.

I figured I had one of the ZeroAccess Viruses going around that is why I listed it in the Malware section.

Thanks for moving it. At least it might not be a virus then.

I can't say as to whether or not it is a virus, but you need to be able to boot to a stable system in order to run the virus scans.

Have you tried booting into safe mode, going to msconfig and stopping all start up processes?

Yes. When I try to go into safe mode I get a blue screen error with all the numbers and things and it also says something about the WDFLDR.SYS missing.

The system was running fine. I did an upgrade to Malwarebytes (to the new versions just released) and it was still good. I also did the online Kaspersky scanner in the evening, everything still good and shut it down hours later. In the morning it started the frozen desktop.

The system boots completely normal except with one quick screen refresh or blink. Then if I click on an icon the courser changes to the hourglass and that's it. I can move the mouse around but no more clicking or keyboard inputs.

I was told I might have that Zero Access virus going around.

I know better then to start reading the web and doing things myself and just make things worse, so I came here hoping to get some help.

My thought is to run combo fix from a boot-up flash drive but I have no idea how to do that or if that is the correct thing to do.

Is this summary accurate: normal mode boots up but then stops responding/freezes after you click anything and safe mode will not load because it throws up an error?

If this is a desktop, swap out the keyboard and mouse just to be sure it isn't a hardware malfunction. Also look in the BIOS and be sure caps lock isn't turned on. I had a computer freeze up and discovered caps lock on was causing my problem as soon as I clicked anything.

Yes, that is an accurate statement of what is going on.

I will switch out keyboard and mouse from another system and give it a shot. I pray that is what the problem is.

Thanks for the idea and ill post back after that test today.

Sorry, I had a Jeep to fix...

I switched out the keyboard and mouse and it had no affect on the problem. (I used 2 keyboards and mice)

After an icon or a keyboard click it's almost like the desktop it's self becomes an image or it pretends to be a image.

Looked in the BIOS to be sure caps lock is not enabled? That's what froze up pne of my computers as soon as I clicked anything.

    Thanks for that reminder.

I checked and it was on. It's now off and still same issue.

*side note* - I tried it again with other keyboard and mouse; no change.

My son and I were talking about this and he said this happened after I did an update of Adobe reader, flash & Java after I watched a movie.

He remembers because I was complaining about the popup I got at the end of the movie I was watching before I shut it down.

To test if any of those updates is the reason and not hardware, log into Ubuntu and see if it works.
If it does, it might be possible to remove Adobe Reader and Java through the Ubuntu side and see if this allows you to boot into windows.

I don't run Ubuntu (too many problems and hated some of my hardware) so I can't help you with that.

I was gone for a few days.

Yes, I can login and have been using Ubuntu side of the system since XP problems. I can see the windows files and most of the folders under it's drive space.

I am still a newbie in Linux and I have no idea how to remove or if those updates can be removed.

I will go over to the Ubuntu forum and ask if it's possible.

*Side note* I am a bit busy currently and It's curbed much of my time on working on this problem. So it might be a few days until I respond to questions or have an answer for something.

I wanted you or anyone else to know so it's known I am not abandoning this thread. I must solve this problem!
