    What upgrade were you doing?

Any upgrade (to Windows) changing system files will leave you with a mixture of old and new. The files from the Windows CD, available through the recovery console will all be the old variety. So taking some files back will cause more problems.

Have you tried booting to the advanced options screen with F8 and choosing last known good configuration?

Upgrade XP Home to XP Pro? It got stuck? What happened during the upgrade and what did you do about it? I personally have never done an upgrade, but have had to deal with systems that were upgraded, and for that reason would recommend against it. Do you have an external hard drive? Dad needs one for backups in case his hard drive kicks the bucket, and to save important files to in case something ever happens. Check out this link also:

Repair will be easier if the computer and the CD either both have, or both don't have SP2 on them. It would also be easier if Microsoft was more explicit in their explanations and always gave real world examples of what we needed to do.

    Have I missed something here?

I don't see any post telling us what it said in the first place.

Please post properly, giving details of

    the exact version of XP
    the upgrade attempted
were you online at the time?
full text of all failure messages.

If you have enough space on the hard drive you can install a second copy of windows to a new folder say 'newind' within the existing.
If you do not choose format at the setup screen and choose to install to the different folder you will have 30 days to repair the old or recover your data files.

If you post answers to the questions we may well be able to help with the repair option.
