I want to do a sfc / scannow but i can not find my cd for love or money (I have a genuine copy) I tried copying the i386 file to C/: and changed the source path to read from this file and not the cd however it refuses to do this, so my only hope is to download a copy of the cd (I am lead to believe that it does not need to be genuine for sfc/scannow) or if anyone has any other idea.

Do you mean that you want to download an illegal and/or "pirated copy" of Windows XP from the Internet?

If this is what you mean; then I would definately NOT advise doing this, not just because downloading and using an illegitimate copy of Windows XP is illegal - but also because using any pirated copies (from who knows where out there on the web) can be very dangerous to your system.

Instead you should try contacting your computer's manufacturer and ask if you can order a copy of the Windows XP Home CD or sometimes companies call this the "OS restore" disk. Many computer manufacturers will do this for a small fee to cover shipping & handling charges.

    Good Luck!

You tried copying the i386 file ?

Well it's a folder anyway, containing lots of files, and it lives on the XP install CD usually

so where did you copy the i386 folder from if you can't find your install CD :confused

If he's downloading a pirated copy of the same version he's already paid for and is not using it to install on a 2nd machine, I don't think it's quite as evil as, say, downloading a pirated program that you do not already own.

However, Compuable is right about it not being safe. Who knows what modifications could have been done to the program that could be potentially hazardous to your system. You probably should take his advice and order a replacement CD.

Also, an install CD from the same version of Windows(ex. XP home upgrade SP2) will also work as the product keys are not built into the CD. Again, it must be the same version.
