xp home edition never updated (helping dad set up dsl)

I'm setting up my father's computer from dial-up to broadband dsl. After much frustration, working with isp provider and getting some better phone lines, I thought all was solved. Then, I discover, dear old Dad has never updated xp from day one (he purchased Dell sometime in 2002). I have xp service pack 2 cd and installing for Dad later today. Any recommendations to avoid further frustration. I don't want to create anymore headaches for ME!

 

When connected to the Internet use IE 5/6/7 browser and go to this site it will check your version of windows and do all the updates, it can take a while so be patient.

Thanks, I'm aware of this site. Can't get online just need to get os current to use dsl. I'm hoping to avoid additional snags.
