Hi all: We've had bad 50+ mph wind up here for the last two days. Yesterday, we lost power twice, both about 5-10 second outages. My PC, Compaq Presario SR1010NX (2004?), has XP Home Edition as its OS. It was on and rebooted fine after first outage. No one was using it, but it was on. I was using it during second outage. When I went to reboot, I get the Compaq screen, and I get the screen that wants me to pick whether to load Windows normally, or choose safe mode, and I hit "normally". It went to the XP Logo screen, with the scrolling bar underneath, and it HUNG there.....does not load beyond that. Doesn't go to blue welcome screen. I powered down. Waited. Did it again. Same thing. Next, I went to "safe mode" without networking. It loaded just fine.

So can anyone tell me what to do to in safe mode to get it to load normally? I do NOT have an XP disc - this computer came loaded with XP and Circuit City did not provide the disc. I do have a backup of the computer, done on 10-12-10, sitting on an external hard drive.

If you have any USB devices, sans your mouse and keyboard, unplug them. Like your printer, scanner, ipod, etc. Try booting into normal mode now.

Sorry about your problem. I live in the Midwest and decided to invest in a good UPS. It has save my butt more times than I can count. They have come down in price and if you find one on sale, I would definitely recommend that you purchase one.

You are welcome. But i would seriously take the advice of getting an Uninterrupted Power Supply, or UPS. I don't have one myself, but thinking of getting one fo sho.

motc7 ... you are a genius!! I was going CRAZY until I read your post and followed your advice. Unplugged all USB devices except the keyboard and mouse and the son-of-a-gun started right up! Thank you very much my friend!
