I got a video capture card recently and am having problems getting the OS to recognize the analog device driver. There tech support tells me that this is a known issue with users operating from the OEM XP SP1 installation disc(which I use having just bought a brand new DELL) . He suggested I try to reinstall the OS from a retail disc.

What could possibly be the difference? I have bought OEM products for years and have always assumed they were the same as retail but without any documentation, software etc.

both OEM and retail are same, except retail has box, manuel, maybe booklet. Retail doesnt have extra software than OEM. Ingore tech support on this issue, he or she must have misterstood. Just go device manager and update drivers on that video capture from floppy or cd that came with your video capture device.

Sounds to me like it is a known issue that tech support can't solve, so they blame something that would cost the home user $100 to remedy. If this is the first or only answer they gave you, chances are they're lying. (My very biased opinion.)

OEM software disks can vary from retail disks, but generally that only relates to additional software and drivers, since, AFAIK, MS doesn't permit OEM resellers to remove anything, and it would be a massive waste of Dell's time to repackage an entire OS.

It is much more likely that your OEM hardware is conflicting with your new card. Both Dell and Gateway have been guilty of altering their machines away from industry standards resulting in machines that don't upgrade well.

If you're a masochist, you can try downloading AIDA32 amd updating drivers to the most recent retail drivers. Of course, that might not work, and, indeed, it might break your system if Dell decided to modify hardware.

Have had problems w/Dell's recently in the workplace. Most were tied to BIOS updates.

This is what I am afraid of. I'll just have to see if they plan on fixing this over the next couple of weeks. Apparently this problem has caused a lot of extra work for them already. If it is a DELL BIOS issue hopefuly the brand name carries enough wait for them to try and fix it.
