Friends have just picked this up second-hand. Just wanting these logs checked please because it looks like something was active a few days ago - while the laptop has been with me being checked and secured, a new Freeze.com folder was created. I'm also a little puzzled that user folders have recent dates on them - is it normal for user folders to have dates change when they are accessed? (I'm also assuming that some of these users are no longer showing up in the User Accounts because they've been deleted.) If dropping a couple of shortcuts into the All Users Desktop folder would cause them to change, shouldn't all the folders have matching dates? Here are the details:

    Thanks!

Hi Chookers, I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you. :)

    1. If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    2. The versin of avg that you have installed is out of date as you are probably aware. The latest version is 9, so you could either upgrade to that or use something a little less resource hungry. If you decide to uninstall avg let me know as I can offer you a link for a removal tool to use after normal uninstallation via add/remove programs, to remove all traces before replacing it with another anti virus.

    3. Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      C:\WINDOWS\devenum.exe
    • At the upload site, click once inside the window next to Browse.
    • Press Ctrl+V on the keyboard (both at the same time) to paste the file path into the window.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

Then do the same for the below files and also let me know the results:

    Code:
    c:\windows\tautoinf.exe

    4. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    5. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\Tasks\PCConfidential.job
    c:\program files\Winferno\PC Confidential\PCConfidential.exe
    c:\windows\Tasks\RegPowerClean.job
    c:\program files\Winferno\RegistryPowerCleaner\RegPowerClean.exe
    C:\windows\Tasks\RPCReminder.job
    c:\program files\Winferno\RegistryPowerCleaner\RPCReminder.exe

    Folder::
    c:\program files\My.Freeze.com Toolbar
    c:\program files\Winferno

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    6. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix. Also let me know the results from Jotti.

    7. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Thanks
    Kes13!

    1. Messenger successfully uninstalled.

    2. Yes, I've been thinking of replacing AVG, hence why I left it alone for now. Not because of resource usage but because the owners are new to computers and the internet and I want something that keeps an eye on the system and downloads, rather than only scanning if you ask it to or a schedule has been set. Keeping an eye on things all the time is what they refer to as "real-time scanning" isn't it? I was under the impression that AVG Free no longer watches over the system continually nor automatically checks downloads, although it seems that Firefox will "invoke" a scan of downloads if an anti-virus program is available, judging by the activity I see. I'm open to suggestions for a replacement, and if configuring is needed to get the real-time protection active, that's fine.

Are there any advantages in the AVG toolbar? I've found it confusing so far. Seems the main thing it's doing is occasionally indicating safe or otherwise sites, (but not always??) and adding text I search for or highlight into its' search box. WOT is installed and working consistently so that covers the safe vs. unsafe sites part of what AVG seems to do intermittently. (Let me know if I should take those questions to Software.)

    3. Just for your info, I couldn't use copy and paste at Jotti - don't know if they changed something recently... if you left-click in the box, you get a "Browse files" box and if you try to paste with Ctrl-V, nothing happens. This is with the latest Firefox with NoScript (Jotti allowed) and AdBlock Plus and AVG toolbar. So I just browsed to the files. Nothing was found in either file.

Devenum was last checked in September and that's what I was told so I requested it be checked again. The first link is September's results:
    C:\WINDOWS\devenum.exe - September
    C:\WINDOWS\devenum.exe - Current

I initially thought devenum.exe might be a Linux command, especially since I found grep.exe in the same folder but the file dates are around 5 years apart. I did find a file that looks like it was probably installed at the same time called unzip.exe that has the same date and time is 1 minute later - don't know if that info helps.

    c:\windows\tautoinf.exe

This is the info from the version tab in Properties for tautoinf.exe:
    Comments: Autorun solution
    Company: Microflash
    File Version: 1,0,0,1
    Internal Name: TAutoINF
    Language: Chinese (Taiwan)
    Legal Trademarks: Microflash
    Original File name: TAutoINF.exe
    Program Name: Microflash disk
    Product Version: 1,0,0,1

    4. Done HJT - removed those items.

    5. ComboFix - this was successful. I assume it's normal for the text file to have disappeared afterwards??

    6. Run getlogs.bat and attached new zip file.

    7. After running ComboFix, my shortcut for this page kept opening in IE, despite the fact that IE settings didn't have it set as the default browser and IE wasn't to check if it was the default browser. However, I then tried opening Firefox by a FF shortcut on the desktop - FF asked did I want to set it as the default browser and that fixed the problem. Also, Firefox was in Offline mode but whether that was because it couldn't find any network connection at the time, I'm not sure. I noticed a few oddities after running ComboFix the first time but they were all easily put right.

The computer is running fine and hasn't displayed any strange behaviour at all. The reason I ran the Readme and came here was because I checked the laptop over when they got it and noticed suspicious looking files and programs.

By the way, I assume that anything that would run from any user account is going to show up in one log or another? I'm using the administrator account to do the work but they will be using the user account and I'd hate to think anything got missed in the user account...

Yes you can discuss this in the software forum. :)

Ahh, I need to update my boilerplate.

I was unable to find out alot about this file, I believe it is legit but I am very curious to know what it relates to as I have not come across it before. Let's do this:

Could you please get this: tautoinf.exe into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:

    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

Do you mean it's executable disappeared from the desktop? It may have become outdated and to continue it's use we would have to download a fresh version. However, we will not need to use it on this account anymore.

Use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the following bold directory:
    Good.
Yes you are welcome to run scans on the other account and you can continue to post logs for that in this same thread here, I don't mind.
