I'm trying to install XP on an old Dell Inspiron 1300.

I get past the initial part of the installation (when it restarts) and IO either get to 16 mins left or it goes straight to "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: system32\drivers\ntfs.sys" I have tried replacing the file in the repair console but to no avail I have also tried a different XP disc but again the same problem.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

I just dealt with the same thing. A reinstall would say files were missing, etc. The disk tested fine in other systems. I pulled out all but one stick of RAM and it installed with no issues.

Cheers, I will give it a try now.

Just went to try but it only has 1 stick of RAM in it but I have some at home so will try later.
