XP keeps logging me off

When I boot Windows XP, I can't get farther than the log on screen. No matter which username I click, it immediately logs me back off--even in Safe Mode.

Here is the history. I was trying to help some friends who had malware on their computer--black desktop with a "you've been infected" message. I started working through your "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" but only got through Step 1--running CCleaner on each user name, including Administrator. Then we got interrupted. Today, I couldn't find the folder of your downloads that I copied to their desktop; although when I tried to copy it again to the desktop from my flash drive I was told the files already existed. I tried to change the wallpaper. It told me I needed to reboot--and now I can't get in to continue your procedure or even scan for the malware.

    What can I do?

if you cant get into windows by any means, you are sort of stuck. You either need to build a boot disk with tools to clean the drive with like with Barts PE.
    http://majorgeeks.com/Barts_PE_Builder_d4007.html

OR hang the drive off a good box and scan it that way.

Of course the 2nd option gives the possibility of the virus jumping to the good box, so be very careful.

Thank you, Corporal Punishment, for your suggestion. It took me awhile to build a BartPE boot disk—but the help files on their website gave me the needed hints. I built an SP2 system from a SP1 Gateway OEM CD for use on the Dell I’m trying to rescue.

Once I was able to boot off the CD, I was able to expand an SP2 Userinit file, and then could log onto the infected system again. So I continued to work through your Malware Removal Guide procedure for XP.

But, after SUPERAntiSpyware had me reboot, I lost the taskbar and everything else on the desktop except the wallpaper. I tried to put explorer back on, but was unsuccessful. So I limped along using the New Task (Run) feature of the Windows Task Manager.

The last tool I ran was ComboFix (because I had run MGtools earlier, trying to fix the no-explorer problem). The first time I ran ComboFix, it warned me that this (freshly downloaded) version of it had already been compromised and that it was NOT SAFE to continue. The actual message was:

    Error!

!!Alert!! It is NOT SAFE to continue!

The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised. Please download a fresh copy from:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-ComboFix

Note: You may be infected with a file patching virus (Vivut)

So I checked the properties on all my copies of ComboFix. The mouse-over file size was the same for all. But looking at their right-click Properties, except for the BartPE CD’s copy, the others were 1) larger than that and 2) had “modified” dates that were EARLIER than their “creation” dates. (!) I copied the boot CD’s file to the invisible desktop of the infected PC and ran it from there. And explorer and the task bar and the whole desktop came back!!!!

But, I’m not sure I’m safe. The little “Windows Update” icon is still in the system tray, asking me to install updates. How can I tell if it is legitimate?

I have attached the logs (I ran SAS twice, but combined the logs into one text file).

Is my system safe? Should I run the scans again? What do you think?

One the infections you have is known as Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.glmu. It is known to possibly do the below along with many other things
    Quoted from http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=a1a3a74040966e0a77e23ffd87a2a3b6

You really should do the below.

Now let's continue with your cleanup.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6FA5FF8D-A693-41C7-8C4C-8D5ABF09F0ED} - c:\windows\system32\whycsbk.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdfadccddkn93.dll - {D5BF49A0-94F3-52BD-F434-3604812C8955} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdfadccddkn93.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Abafuketomiv] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\uyoruzif.dll",e
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Diagnostic Manager] C:\DOCUME~1\Lesliemo\LOCALS~1\Temp\2902811158.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: qaffukil - whycsbk.dll (file missing)
    O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: lkjf9873jhifjnsfi8w3fe - {D5BF49A0-94F3-52BD-F434-3604812C8955} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdfadccddkn93.dll (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Lesliemo\Local Settings\Temp

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you, chaslang, for your analysis and your help! I have taken your advice to heart (my own computer got infected during this process, to be the subject of a new thread) and I have passed your instructions on to my friend whose computer is the subject of this one. (That computer seems to be working more predictably now, but I've been keeping it shutdown in between replies.)

Here are the results from following your procedure:

I was able to uninstall Windows Messenger using your tool. The only message was, "|Removed| Windows Messenger has been uninstalled." And it does not show up in the System Tray the system reboots.

I could not find ANY of the lines you asked me to check using MGtools\analyse.exe. So I exited the program without "fixing" anything.

ComboFix worked without any error message--other than warning me about no Recovery Console. Since the computer in question is currently disconnected from the internet, I hoped I could skip that step for now.

I found no files without today's date in either C:\WINDOWS\temp or in C\Documents and Settings\~\Local Settings\temp (there were no directories named capital-T "Temp" in either location). Each directory has one file with today's date on it: C:\WINDOWS\temp has "Perflib_Perfdata_478.dat" (Video CD movie-16k) and C:\~\Documents and Settings\Temp has "jusched.log" (Text doc-1k).

    Ccleaner found 0 files.

The Automatic Updates icon reappeared in the System Tray, offering me one update: "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2009 (KB890830)". I haven't installed it yet. When it's safe to reconnect the computer to the internet, I planned to manually update Windows--after I add the Recovery Console manually. That is, unless you instruct me otherwise.

I have attached the logs you requested, below.

The main purpose of installing the Recovery Console was for safety purposes prior to running ComboFix. However it can also be useful in the future especially if a Windows Boot CD is not available for the PC.

    Your logs are clean now.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
