XP Locking up at startup. Any ideas?

    9 out of 10 times I turn on my PC it locks up when it starts to load before I am able to click on user to continue start up proceedure. I have to hold the start button down to restart my PC and then I get to the safe mode screen. I tried to fix using the XP cd at start up and getting to the c:/fixboot idea but it diddnt help. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks. Oh, I forgot to tell you that I can get through that spot where it locks up after a couple restarts.

    Two possibilities ....software issue or hardware issue.
    Get into your bios settings and check temps and voltages .... also be sure that it's reporting your ram as accurate.
    If all that is OK, then you could try a repair installation of xp ... not recovery console, repair!
