Well, I like to think that I at least somewhat know what I'm doing on my PC, but it seems I really screwed myself this time. I have stylexp and all of that, but the other week I was messing around w/ boot & logon screens. I restarted to see if it worked and from then on all i get after XP starts up is a black screen, instead of the logon screen. I can see the XP load screen but right after that it goes black. Well I messed around w/ a bunch of things I probably shouldn't have, like sys32 files, trying to figure out why it just went to black.. Now the only way I can run XP is in safe mode, and system restore didnt work. Is there an easy way to fix this, or am I doomed to a reformat??? I have a lot of things on this HD that I dont want to lose, and it wont let me burn CDs in safe mode.. Just thought I would ask the majorgeeks if they had any ideas before I delete this old friend of mine :(

TIA for help anyone can offer

Instead of safe mode, try last known good configuration on the boot selection screen

If u remember which files you changed, try to go to another installation of Windows to get the files that you need and replace the messed up files...

I am not sure if changing your configuration will change the files that you modified other than mainly registry stuff...

Maybe try running System File Checker...

Hi Harlot Wo... there gal.. dont format as you have a facility on your XP instalation disc that will ''Repair'' your XP OS..put the XP instaltion disc in then start start your com. and press enter on boot and get to BIOS settings. I think its the second one down you need on the page you will be taken to., and change boot sequence to CD first. Then press F10 and then ''Y'' and it will save and reboot. Go to install and follow on screen instructions, and choose ''Repair'' after the install page.(So press install first) The second time you see ''Repair'' press ''R'' and away you go.. No other Progs on com. will be touched just a new installed XP..

did u make a backup file of the files u changed around? if not u should get a copy of them from a working computer. when u turn on the computer press F8 and choose to start with commad prompt. when it starts up go into administrator. when the CMD comes up type
    "copy C:\windows\sys32\explorer.exe C:\windows\sys32\???.exe"

    ???=name of modded files
dont type in the " "
that is assuming explorer is the file that you modded and that is the location of the files

Ummm I fink we could be at cross purposes here, its not the Explorer page it is when the XP has fully loaded that a logon screen appears to access the rest of the computer.. :)

    Ugh.

If Safe Mode works, and normal does not, its obvious it is a third party software or driver causing the problem.

A repair may not fix it, and certainly was quite uneccessary.

Let me know if the repair doesn't fix it.
