Hello; Looking for any suggestions to fix a possible problem with the new MS Media 9 Series software. Prior to installing it I could play a CDrom game called "Wild Metal Country" that was included with my old computer system (MS98) with a Diamond Video Card. The game was produces by Gremlin in England. It has worked well with my new computer system ( P4-3.0gHz) OS XP-Pro using MS Media 8 Series.
When I installed the MS Media 9 Series with DirectX 9 graphics, it will not play. It will bring the game up and when you type in the players name and depress "enter" the screen goes blank and my home page appears. I have checked everything I can. I suspect that there is a software incompatibility. The developer of the game is no longer in business, as I thought I could contact them for a new driver. Has anyone else had a problem with older games that played well under the MS Media 8 Series software, but are not operating with Media 9 Series? Any suggestions?
    Best Regards, govgov

Hi It is a Video game. The program is loaded to the hard drive, but you need the disk in the CDrom drive to play it. Thanks govgov

Not a Media Player issue, a DirectX issue, if I read it right.

Newer versions of DirectX are supposed to be backward-compatible, and older games usually work fine with the newer versions. But occasionally one refuses to work with the newer ones. You can try compatibility mode, which may help, but if not, it may be time to retire the game, as DirectX is difficult to uninstall, and the newest games all require it.

Btw, windows media player plays music, videos, and if your drive is capable, dvd's. It does not play video games. Video games have nothing to do with windows media 9.

May I ask what game it is?

The problem with a few older games is they make non-standard calls to the Direct Media (not DirectX), that were acceptable to older version that the newer versions (i.e. DX9) will not allow, to play intro videos and such. Unless the developer provides an update to the program you are more than likely out of luck.

Rockstar Games Clasics has released it as freeware the same as they did with the original GTA and they claim to have updated it for modern systems. You might want to check it out.
