I have someone who has an XP peer to peer network with 6 desktops (5 are XPsp2 and the other is XP Pro,sp2) and he added a HP Laserjet 4000N with a JetDirect Card. We hooked it up directly to the switch. The switch is connected to a Linksys Router. We ran a print config which showed that the Laserjet obtained the ip address but when we go into network places we can not find the printer the desktops can not see it . Can anyone help us on this.

    did you install the drivers?

Yes we installed the drivers using HP's cd and when we had it search the network it could not locate the printer.

This printer was originally attached to a workstation but, feeling it would be available more consistantly to the others, we wanted to put it on the network.

if you go to printers and faxes its should be in there unless you didnt add it.

The problem is it does not see the printer on the network when we go into what you suggested. I comes up blank. I tried to ping the ip address from the Printer's configuration sheet we printed out and it times out. I see the lights lit at each end of the cat5 so i believe they're connected. I'm at me wits end and have no idea. HP was no help either, no suprise there, lol. I appreciate any other ideas you may have. Thanks

im not sure how you did it ill just tell you how i would have done it.

go to printers and faxes click add printer, click next, select local printer and make sure automatically detect isnt checked and click next, click create new port, select standard tcp/ip port, enter the ip from the printer config, i dont remember what the next window is i think its the driver window. if it is click have disk and it should install the printer. hope this helps.

i dont think its a good idea to let the printer get ip form dhcp. it needs to have a static address.

Here's what i did. I first tried to add a printer and went through two senarios, one i tried to have it found on the network, the second I tried to add it by the tcp/ip port and put in the ip address. They both did not work. That's when I tried to ping the printer and it timed out.

I must be missing something but I just don't know. Still, your suggestions are right on to what I tried already.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks again.

thats about all i can think of to tell you. maybe someone else knows more about it. i remember back in school one of our hp laserjets stopped working over the network and we couldnt figure out why. we just had to end up putting it locally on computer.

I appreciate your efforts, thank you. I hope someone who reads this post might have some more ideas.

It sounds like the printer's ip address is on a different subnet than the rest of your network...do you know the ip of the printer? Since the HP install disk cannot find the printer, check the ip address scheme, test cable connectivity, check ports on the switch (uplink port), and firewalls. Hope that helps.
