    :cry
I am new to 64 bit systems. I purchased a used DELL workstation. It is a 64 bit system, dual processors... it was orginally built for XP pro 64bit. so I found a restore disk for DELL for this... installed the smoothest I have ever encountered...NOW comes the problem... NOTHING works with it. I cannot get the USB wireless reciever to light up though it worked before when I first tried 32 bit OS. but the 32 bit OS kept giving me errors and freeze ups... I really would like to get the 64 bit OS working good. Can someone please tell me what I need to do?

Re: Reinstalling the Windows XP Operating System from the OS Setup Disk (and most importantly) Installing the Dell Drivers and Utilities (from the Dell CD)

Was it a restore disk "PC Restore" or was it the Windows XP operating system disk from Dell?

In other words; when you reinstalled Windows XP professional 64-bit did you reinstall the operating system directly from the CD or DVD? And did you also Update to Service Pack 3?

Also, did you install ALL of the Dell drivers and utilities (directly from the Dell Drivers and Utilities CD from the manufacturer) configure the OS, and then install ALL of the critical, optional and recommended Windows Updates (as well as install the required driver updates), install your other various applications and, if available, restore backed up data files?

If you have not done so already; you should go to Windows Update as well as going to Dell Support - Drivers and Downloads and downloading the very latest drivers (after all the Windows Updates, I mean).

I used one of those red restore disks, then went to DELL and looked up the system to get the drivers that would fit the XP Pro 64. But several of them would not work. So I guess I need to keep trying to find the ones I need..I have to load them on this computer then take them to that one on a USB stick. I will have to find the stand alone SP3 ...it came with SP2 on the restore disk. I was reading about the XP PRO 64bit being a bad deal and wondered if this was so. If I cannot get it to work right...what system would you recommend I install? it is a Precision 670.

Regrettably, I have to agree about the XP PRO 64bit being overall "a bad deal" but especially bad with regards to compliance w/older model-Dell desktops.

Seriously, I’ve heard so many complaints over time; and in various computer-related forums, with regards to the 64-bit Windows XP pro operating system, but in particular w/the inability to function properly with the older model Dell desktop computers. With regards your current model; the Dell Precision 670, which was a Business/Corporate class brand, this model was actually the first to be shipped with series Single (or) the Dual-Core 64-bit Xeon, which was actually "top of the line" at that time... However, the Dell Company promptly discontinued the later model lines of Dell Precision desktop models quite a while ago.

The reason was in part, because of the many difficulties customers had with the later Precision desktop lines that were 64-bit compliant; but had numerous and nagging problems with the Windows XP 64-bit operating systems and it's innate inability to work with manufacturer installed drivers and the unavailability to obtain adequate driver updates as well as failure to work with the software applications which were 32-bit based.

On the bright side of things, this model – the Precision 670 – was also the first to have a maximum memory capacity of 16GB DDR2. If you decide to keep this particular Dell desktop, and it came with a small amount of installed memory; I would definitely advise adding more memory to it. The Dell Precision 670 desktop computer originally came shipped from the manufacturer with a mere 512MB of 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM which was included at the low base price, but was paltry by any standard. However, the ability to add up to 16 GB SDRAM maximum - was a huge selling point when it originally came out.

Side Notes: I have heard (a select few) folks say that they has successfully "moved up" to Windows 7 with Precision desptops; as well as other 64-bit friendly older-model Dell desktops as well. However I do not personally recommend this. Instead, if really you like to use Dell products in general: then my advice - if you can swing it - would definitely be to sell the Precision (on some site like craigslist, or even eBay); and then use the money in order to help you "move up" to a newer model desktop, which has Windows 7 64-bit as the operating system (which is a much better OS in my opinion - but not with older Dells)

Also, with Windows 8 coming out soon; in October I think, some newer-model Dells (with Windows 7 64-bit) can be had for much less money nowadays (here’s an example: something like the Dell Inspiron 620)

I went back to Dell's site and got a few more drivers. NOW it will play the games I loaded on it but has no sound. It only offers one sound driver for this model. So will have to dig somemore. Your suggestions and observations are very much appreciated. The computer will be used only for kids games... I had bought it on Ebay as a fill in when my main system went down (an XPS system from DELL that had the processor go down and I have the replacement to put in) but as I was updating some software I went ahead and got a new dual core XPS i7 with Win 7 Ultimate on it. Has been a learning experience. Gone are the days of the simplicity of Dos 6.6 and such. Some may not agree but I would be satisfied to NOT keep up with the trends. I just want one system to do all I need it to do and I am hoping the new one does just that. I am getting to an age where this might be my last computer...yep dating myself here. I am very thankful for this forum. I always find information that helps me. If this thing can play the kids games with decent graphics (BIG VIDEO CARD!) and I can get the sound working, I will be happy. It keeps the grandkids happy when they come to visit and if I never get it online that is okay too... less to worry about when they are playing. I do not allow online games. Too many things out there to mess up a good system and not all kids are savvy about what is good and acceptable. Thank you much for your help. I will never go with the XP Pro 64 bit again. But for now I am stubborn enough to want to defeat it.
