Well, I finally decided to upgrade from Win 200Pro to XP-Pro. However, I do have a question or two. I just came from Newegg.com and they have XP-Pro 'Builders Edition,' and I'm just curious what the difference is between 'builders edition' and just the regular XP-Pro? Or is there even a difference? I was told that the builders edition doesn't have all the same 'stuff' as the regular edition, and I was told that with the builders edition there is no activation required. I was told alot of other things also, so I figured I'd better come here and get the straight story!!! THANKS!!;)

    Link?

Its probably just an OEM version, and will have everything a normal retail CD has.

The OEM has everything a retail version has. It is however to be installed on one machine only. A full retail version can be installed on as many computers as you want, but only one computer at a time... So if you get the OEM, and then build a new computer in a year, you will need to buy a new OS.

And if they are anything like Tiger Direct...in order to buy an OEM copy of Windows...you have to buy some kind of hardware at the same time. I guess that is there way of legally selling you the OEM copy cause if you buy a piece of hardware then I guess they can say you are building a retail system as far as they know. Who knows the reasoning about that, but don't be surprised if that is the case.

Funny thing is...the kid tried to sell me a piece of hardware that would have made the total cost more that just buying the retail copy of windows, but I just gave him the raised eyebrow and grabbed me a case fan for $3.00 and left it at that.

First of all, thank-you all for your replies, and secondly, I think your secret will be safe with us Fred_G!!! However, if I'm questioned I may 'break' under the stress, but I'll try to hold out as long as I can:-D Anyhow, I guess I'll have to go with the 'retail' version, because I need to use it on 2 machines, my son's and my own. As for having to buy hardware when you buy an OEM OS, when I bought my Win2000 Pro about 2 years ago I had to buy hardware with it also. So I bought one stick of RAM. Some people are lucky and can get away with just a pack of case screws!!;)

If you're going to use Windows on two computers, you need to buy two copies of Windows. The retail version simply allows you to transfer it from one computer to another... you can't use the same copy of Windows on two machines at the same time.

Thanks for the replies!! At least that solved one of my problems. Since the retail XP is about $75.00 more than the Builders Edition, I'll just get 2 of the Builders Editions....problem solved!!!

Again, thanks for all your replies. BTW, I mentioned that it solved ONE of my problems....the other one is trying to talk my wife into letting me buy the 2 discs!!:-D Unfortunatly, that is one problem ya'll can't help me with!!:cry HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!!!!!
