Attahced is a my sys summary:

Due to somehow disabeling my rpc service, xp no longer worked... duh.. ok

so I reinstalled xp pro and didn't reformat, just did a clean install of windows...

have had to reinstall several programs, no issue, but while not available on my current start/programs list, all my old programs are listed on the hard drive and yet I can't access my previous documents folder that is shown under the my documents section.

I can also find these files still on my hard drive with a hex viewer (disk investigator, etc.) but can't seem to recover them...

am looking for assistance in recovering some of my "created" files and then cleaning up my hard drive and simplifying the whole thing.... make sense?

    thanks...

Well, I think I solved my own problem...

completely cleaned and reformated the drive and reinstalled XP pro w/sp2

Just now I no longer have the C drive... as it is now H and of course it can't be changed

any thoughts on this whole thing are still welcome... though much happier now :p

Your original issue was merely a permissions problem. Too late now, though.

As for your current issue, XP assigns drive letters by what it detects as valid first.

That means other partitions, zip drives and some removeable devices. If you are going to format, you need to do it from the XP CD, and stay within setup while doing it to avoid this.

There is no way to fix this without reformatting again due to the letter being hardcoded into the regsitry.

Minimize other devices that can be assigned a drive letter before doing ti again to help ensure you get drive C. I know its a pita, but hey, lesson learned :)
