have a somewhat older computer with 3 hard drives. windows 98se, xp pro, and a storage drive. windows 98 is fast and no issues. the xp pro is a brand new install and slower than death. not sure what information is needed so will just ramble a bit.

    motherboard
    esc
    p6s5at
    chipset sis

    processor
    intel celeron 3
core speed runs about 798 mhz

    memory
    ddr 1024

    sound blaster live
    3dfx voodoo3
    standard floopy
    3 com ethernet adapter
40 gb hard drive (xp pro)
    60 gb hard drive (98se)
    80 gb hard drive (storage)

    dvd/cdrw lite-on combo sohc-4836v
    printer hp photosmart 1215
    lg flatron L1720p monitor
hp scanjet 3570v scanner (connected but not installed)
    standard keyboard
    standard mouse

i have run glary utilities and it showed no problems. also ran hijack this with no problems. which doesn't really surprise me as the xp is so slow i am not using it.

i have used blackviper and shut off services in the tweak section.

only thing on start up is avast anti virus program.

i believe the processor and the xp pro are both 32-bit.

question is..... what am i missing that is causing the xp to run so slow? or is it just not going to get any faster?

    thanks

You meant ECS p6s5at, right? And, there may be different versions of it, so you need to determine whether yours is V1.6, the version in the above link, or a different version. To determine the version, see http://www.ecs.com.tw/extra/productinfo/MB.htm

Assuming your mb is V1.6, the first link above has a driver you probably need to download and install. It's the SiS 635 GART VxD Driver, for Win 2000 and Win XP.

I see they also have a BIOS update: BIOS for P6S5AT(PCB:1.6) that seems appropriate for you. Be sure to read the link there for How to use AMI Flash Utility?. A failed BIOS update can render your system inoperative.

If you open Device Manager, do you see any yellow triangles with an exclamation mark in them? Do you see any items there labeled "unknown device"?

yes, i did mean ecs. sorry.

i checked for the version number, and there is none. on start up i noticed that it said
    P6s5at release 8-30-002
so i figure that perhaps it was version 1? anyway, did a search every which way and the only thing i can find that even comes close (that is in english) is at http://www.bios-drivers.com.
    the driver is listed as
    BIOS, P6S5AT PCB 1.X, Version 02/08/30 driver p6s5at020830.exe

the bcb is throwing me off. is this the driver i need?

no exclamation marks in device manager. one question mark for the scanner, i don't have the drivers loaded for it yet. no unknown devices are showing.

    thanks for you help

You'll probably have to open the case and look at the motherboard, as explained in the link. Have you ever had your computer open and seen the inside?

And, assuming your mb is v1.6, I'd get the BIOS from ECS (link previously posted); Version 37197 is the one with:
Update Description: 1. Fixed the standby selection of start menu becomes to be inactive action after installing Windows XP

i should have explained myself a little better. yes, i am very familiar with the inside of my computer. i did check the version number. and there is none. all that is on the mb is p6s5at, which is why i looked for the release date. i checked the ecs site and cannot find a driver for the release date mentioned.
    thanks

Using the Downloads Search feature on the aforementioned link, I determined that your mb is a Socket 370 mb and there's only one version, which is 1.6.

As you can see, the release date for the BIOS update there is 2003/03/28, whcih is more recent than any of the BIOS updates shown on http://www.bios-drivers.com for your mb. By the way, the BIOS update may not do anything whatsoever as far as the performance issue you're experiencing. The BIOS update is for a specific issue.

So, since your Device Manager seems to reflect no significant problem, I'm at a loss as to what's causing the very slow performance. I still think I'd grab that SiS 635 GART VxD Driver.

yes, my mb is a socket 370.

i think you are correct and since the issue i am having is not the issue the update is for i did not do it.

i did however download the gart vxd driver. now i am really confused! these are the directions for installing as found on the agp107xp.

    ===== Installation =====
Win2000 -- Win2000 AGP (inf installation, setup installation)
Win98 -- Win98 AGP (inf installation, setup installation)
WinMe -- WinMe AGP (inf installation, setup installation)

    1. By Setup Installaion
    Run "Setup"
    2. By Inf Installation
    To install Win98/WinMe AGP driver:
    1. Go to device manager, expand system device, right-click
on the PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge.
    2. Select the "Driver" page and press the "Update Driver"
button. Go through the "Display a list of all the drivers
in a specific location" page select "Have Disk"
    3. Enter the location of your new INF and driver.

    To install Win2000 AGP driver:
    1. Go to device manager, right-click on the PCI-PCI bridge
which represents your AGP bridge and select "Properties".
    2. Select the "Driver" page and push the "Update Driver"
button. Go through the update driver wizard and on the
"Locate Driver Files" page select "Specify a location"
    3. Enter the location of your new INF and driver.

    *************************************************

i am assuming that the directions would be similar to the 2000 directions. my device manager does not have a pci-pci bridge. the only mention of pci in the device manager are

    sis pci ide controller
    pci bus
    sis pci to isa bridge
sis 7001 pci to usb open host controller
sis 7001 pci to usb open host controller

is one of these the driver or am i missing something?

thank you so much for taking the time with this.

i did get the sis 635 gart driver installed. it did make a bit of difference, but not much. i ran pitstop and it was recommended that i create a TcpWindowSize registry entry. not quite sure of the terminology here.

after creating a new registry setting for TcpWindowSize it says to change the Base Setting to Decimal and the value to 64240.

not sure what these are. is the base setting the type and the value the data? i don't see anything labeled base setting or value in the registry.

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks
